News about Vanessa Hudson

When Alan Joyce steps down as Qantas CEO in November, Vanessa Hudson was appointed to succeed him. She was chosen among some 40 candidates from around the world and will go down in history as the first female CEO of the national airline in its 103 years of existence.

The board “feels strongly” that Ms Hudson, who has worked for the organization for 28 years in various key roles, is “the right person to move Qantas forward”, according to Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) says it faces an “uphill battle” to “rebuild” the corporation while taking the helm at a time when Qantas’s reputation requires improvement. Ms. Hudson earned a business degree from the University of Technology Sydney in 1991 and the following year she began working as an auditor for the major accounting firm Deloitte.

She started working for Qantas in 1994 as an internal audit supervisor before moving to the business division as financial controller. She was hired as a hospitality product manager in 1997, which marked the beginning of her involvement in product services and led to her promotion to executive product and services manager in 2005.

Qantas said Ms Hudson “oversaw the transformation across hospitality, airports and the network to drive better customer and business outcomes” in her capacity.

Before returning to Sydney as Executive Director of Sales and Distribution in 2016, where she was responsible for the airline’s revenue across all sales channels, she traveled to Los Angeles in 2013 to serve as Senior Vice President of the US division of the airline.

Ms Hudson was appointed as Customer Service Director in February 2018 and is now responsible for Qantas’ overall customer service and strategy. In addition, she was appointed chief financial officer of Qantas Group in October 2019.

Just months before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the airline industry to a standstill, Ms. Hudson began working as a CFO.

Along with Mr. Joyce, he steered the business through difficult waters that resulted in the cancellation of nearly all international flights and the early retirement of the famed Boeing 747 fleet. The airline put its 12 Airbus A380s into storage, reducing the value of its assets at $1.4 billion.

In June 2020, Qantas announced hundreds of redundancies affecting all aspects of the business. A month later, the airline reported a loss of $2 billion for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Internal calculations revealed that Qantas suffered a loss of sales of around $16 billion in the previous financial year, a slight decrease of $1.73 billion.
