Vanessa Lachey Admits She and Husband Nick Debate Who Is ‘Ready’ for Marriage Before Love Is Blind Weddings (Exclusive)

Warning: This story contains spoilers from the Season 6 reunion Love is blind.

Vanessa Lachey and Nick Lachey win really invested when it comes to pairs on Love is blind.

Speaking with PEOPLE about the sixth season of the Netflix hit, Vanessa admits that she and her husband often speculate about who they think is “ready” for marriage after helping Love is blind participants go shopping for wedding dresses and tuxedos ahead of their big days.

“When we get to the wedding dress and tux shop, I don’t see the men and Nick doesn’t see the women, but we come back together and he and I talk,” she says. “And he had his own feelings about who he thought was ready and who wasn’t yet, and I did [have] mine.”

However, according to Vanessa, these predictions do not always align.

“You know, I’m always an optimist,” notes the NCIS: Hawaii star, 43. “I say, ‘Oh, I see it. I feel it.’ I mean, you’re in a wedding dress shop, you’ve got beautiful dresses, there’s butcher boards, and your family is there, and there’s champagne, so I always feel all the love on that day, and of course, you’re going to feel the most beautiful when you walk out in a dress.”

“But I guess it’s different for guys. And that’s how Nick felt every season, and we talk about it, and sometimes he’s right, and sometimes we’re like, ‘What?'” Vanessa shares. “But for the most part, I believe a lot of them, really played the way they were supposed to.”

Things have changed for the Lacheys, who were initially heavily involved in the process in the first season. Now in their sixth season as co-hosts, Vanessa says they’ve become a little more “removed from the process” but always hope for the best for the couples.

“From the first season until now, we’re so far removed from the process, because ultimately, it’s their journey,” she explains. “The first season, we were there for the whole process. We actually moved to Atlanta, and anyone from the first season will tell you, we talked to them every step of the way, every moment. When they went on vacation or a romantic getaway, we were we were with them, we talked with them there. We came home with them. We went to their hometowns. We didn’t go to visit their families, but we went to their apartments, we sat with them in their apartments, and some of them told us we made dinner, and some just drank a little wine, and we went with them. We made a lot. And so we really felt the whole process completely.”

“How it translates now is just being who you are and letting those couples have their own experience and their own journey, and also being realistic with how many successful seasons they’ve had,” she continues. “Nick and I are living in Hawaii now and I’m actually filming another show and he’s filming A perfect matchand we both shoot Ultimatum. It’s not really possible.”

“It’s really just a better way to give them their own experience,” adds Vanessa.

Love is blind: The Biggest Bombshells of the Season 6 Reunion

Season 6 just ended, and the reunion episode aired on Wednesday. Many bombshells were revealed during the special, including the fact that Jeramey Lutinski and Sarah Ann Bick started dating after Jeramey split from his fiancee Laura Dadisman, Amber Desiree “AD” Smith went on two dates with Matthew Dulib after Clay Gravesande left at the altar, and Johnny McIntyre and Amy Cortés confirmed that they are still happily married.

Trevor Sova also returned to the series to address rumors that he secretly had a girlfriend while filming the series. Speaking about the moment, Vanessa tells PEOPLE that she’s not entirely sure the 31-year-old understood the impact of his actions.

“I think Trevor is figuring it out and I don’t think he understood the extent of what that meant,” she explained. “He’s actually talking about it at the reunion… I hope he’s talking now, and he sees that it could be hurtful for both women.”

“But yeah, he’s been going through a lot and I’m proud of him for coming out and speaking his mind,” she continues. “It’s just not fair to everyone if you’re holding back or lying to other people there… You’ll have to watch his reaction at the reunion and make your own reasoning for his thought process.”

A first for the series, the reunion was filmed in front of a live audience and also featured the return of several of them Love is blind female students, including Season 1’s Giannina Gibelli, Season 3’s Alexa Alfia Lemieux and Brennon Lemieux, as well as Colleen Reed and Matt Bolton; season 4 Kwame Appiah and Chelsea Griffin Appiah, Brett Brown and Tiffany Pennywell Brown, and Micah Lussier, and season 5 Izzy Zapata.

According to Vanessa, having those people in the room brought a special kind of “energy” while filming the special.

“There’s a lot of eyes on this. It was really nice to get the family back together,” she says. “And they’re so fun at the reunion because they add another layer that I don’t think anyone will expect.”

“They’re already sitting outside, they’re on the couches and they’re facing the stage, and there’s the live audience we had, so you can feel that energy,” she adds. “But the great thing is that we were able to shoot this for over five hours and let people have their say, tell their story from beginning, middle to end, without rushing, without missing anyone. And then they put together a wonderful assembly that I think everyone will love it.”
