The 31-year-old returned to the reunion series on Wednesday night and set the record straight about secretly having a girlfriend while filming the show.

Speaking to PEOPLE about Trevor’s return, Vanessa says she’s not entirely sure he understood the impact of his actions.

“I think Trevor is figuring it out, and I don’t think he understands the extent of what that means either,” NCIS: Hawaii the star, 43, explains. “He really talks about it at the reunion, and that’s something Nick and I really try to emphasize when we first see them in the pods: ‘Be true to yourself, so you can allow yourself this true experience and find that person who loves you. no matter what. But also, because when this part happens and it hits Netflix and people all over the world know about it, there’s no skeletons in your closet. There’s no hiding behind anything. If you come out and just own who you are or what’s going on , then you’re in a good place.'”

“But yeah, he’s been going through a lot and I’m proud of him for coming out and speaking his mind,” she continues. “It’s just not fair to everybody if you’re holding back or lying to other people out there. And also, that was a position that maybe another guy could have, that maybe somebody else could have met their partner. You know, all the other women who haven’t met the guy, maybe that place he took could have been another guy. But maybe he didn’t think like that.”

He then adds, “You’ll have to watch his reaction at the reunion and make your own reasoning for his thought process. But yeah, human nature is fascinating, and I think that’s also a wonderful reason why this works, so we’ll see.”

Love is blind: The Biggest Bombshells of the Season 6 Reunion

During Wednesday’s Season 6 reunion special, Trevor became confused after Vanessa and co-host Nick Lachey confronted him about having “someone on the outside” while trying to find his person on the reality dating experiment.

Nick and Vanessa pulled the messages Trevor allegedly sent to his girlfriend, which read in part: “I love you more than anything in this world. And I’m going to marry you” and “I hope you know how much I love you. And I had to pretend this isn’t real life to say anything I said.”

Trevor struggled for words before finally explaining that he “wasn’t dating her, ‘dating her’ technically, I never said, ‘Will you be my girlfriend?’ before the show started, but… we were obviously close.”

“She was the type of girl I would love in real life,” he continued. “I told her before [that] I want to continue with this to try experimenting with something else. There’s no excuse for it – what I just said sounds bloody awful.”

When Nick, 50, pointed out that Trevor had said before entering the experiment that he “loved” his girlfriend and that a man wouldn’t say that to a woman he wasn’t serious with, Trevor tried to reason: “I cared about her … She and I were so fucking toxic.”

“I’m toxic too, I admit it. I need a lot of therapy,” he added. “I know I have to fucking change. I don’t know what you want me to say.”

Trevor’s ex, Chelsea Blackwell, also got a moment to address him, saying: “I’m definitely not here to roast you in any way. It didn’t work out for us. I had an intuition why I didn’t choose you and I couldn’t explain it, but now I can.”

Trevor insisted his feelings for Chelsea were genuine and said he did not come to the series for fame or to advance his career. “I came here for good reasons and bad reasons. I can’t take back that I went on the show. I’m glad I went on the show because I learned a lot about myself,” he said.

Nick later pointed out that he would not “tolerate” anyone coming to the show for “the wrong reasons” before dismissing Trevor from the stage.

According to Vanessa, having those people in the room brought a special kind of “energy” as they filmed the reunion special.

“There’s a lot of eyes on this. It was really nice to get the family back together,” she said. “And they’re so fun at the reunion because they add another layer that I don’t think anyone will expect.”

“They’re already sitting outside, they’re on the couches and they’re facing the stage, and there’s the live audience that we had, so you can feel that energy,” she continued. “But the great thing is that we were able to shoot this for over five hours and let people have their say, tell their story from beginning, middle to end, without rushing, without missing anyone. And then they put together a wonderful assembly that I think everyone will love it.”
