Jenny McCarthy Recalls Attending 1997 Oscars in Valentino Gown She Accidentally Wore Backward

Jenny McCarthy’s first time at the Oscars is definitely one to remember.

While appearing on Living with Kelly and Mark with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on March 14 Masked singer The panelist, 51, reflected on her debut at the 1997 Oscars, which came with a big lesson in designer dressing.

“You were at the Oscars. What’s your big take out?” asked Ripa, who wore a sheer Jason Wu gown on the red carpet at the 2024 Academy Awards on Sunday.

“Well, the funny thing is, I went to the Oscars once. They called me when I was an It girl. Every year they invite the It girl. I was only invited once, obviously,” McCarthy explained.

“I literally worked in a Polish grocery store for a year and a half before I went to the Oscars, so I didn’t know much. They dressed me in a Valentino dress — I didn’t know I was wearing the dress upside down,” she revealed.

That year, McCarthy wore a sheer gown with a jeweled neckline and white sequined rose embellishments that curled around the bodice and skirt.

The Jenny the star recalled how she thanked Valentin Garavani on the red carpet for letting her “borrow” the dress, only for the legendary designer to call out her tailoring mistake.

“He said, ‘You’re wearing it upside down.’ You know what, I’m not surprised, I’ve been smelling like Polish sausage ever since I worked in a deli!” McCarthy said.

Ripa was defended by McCarthy saying that the back of the dress should have been the front, just like the actress wore it. McCarthy thanked the co-host for “standing up” for her 27 years later.

While she looks back on past fashion mistakes, when it comes to marrying Donnie Wahlberg, she’s definitely looking to the future.

The couple, who tied the knot in August 2014, are celebrating their 10th anniversary in a few months, and McCarthy opened up to Ripa and Consuelos all about her romantic plans.

“We are reviewing our vows each “, McCarthy said, adding that for her and Wahlberg (54), constantly exchanging vows is like renewing a driver’s license.

When asked if they have any “big plans,” McCarthy said they are in the middle of “figuring it out,” but says a trip to the island with her children is a possibility. The couple’s family includes McCarthy’s son, Evan, whom she shares with ex-husband John Asher, and Wahlberg’s sons, Xavier Alexander and Elijah Hendrix, with ex-wife Kimberly Fey.
