Vegas-style Sphere would’ve brought visitors & fun to London but jumped up Sadiq Khan rejected it over Net Zero ideology

WHEN I first saw footage of U2 performing in that huge new electric dome in Las Vegas, I was blown away.

I’ve always loved big sound and light events.

The Who at Wembley in 1979. It was so big that the air traffic controllers at Heathrow made them switch off the lasers.

Then, that same year, there was Led Zep and Jimmy Page, playing his guitar with a violin bow, enveloped in tetrahedrons of light.

These things made me run in circles, screeching and rattling.

That’s why I was so excited about the new dome. I’m not a huge U2 fan and I don’t really like Las Vegas, but I immediately decided I had to get on a plane and go there. To experience it.

For various reasons based on pigs and cows, it never happened. But it wasn’t the end of the world because I heard rumors that they were going to build another dome – in London.

Brilliant, I thought.

Unfortunately, however, the mayor of this once great city, Sadiq Khan, thought otherwise.

He said it would cause too much light pollution. Really? In London. Is he angry?

‘Fuck off’

And he said it would take too much electricity.

He actually sat there, in his air-conditioned, fully lit goldfish bowl in an office on the banks of the Thames, in a city where the birds sing at night because it’s so bright, and he said that.

Sadiq Khan defends £6.3m revamp of Overground lines including new names such as Windrush, Suffragette and Lioness

“Hello, Mr. Khan. We would like to invest in your city and bring millions of visitors from all over the world, which would be great news for London’s hotels, bars and restaurants.”

“Fuck off!”

If some local wee whined about light pollution and mental health issues in the community, I’d put my fingers in my ears and hum loudly until they shut up.

If I ran a council in Leeds, Newcastle or Cardiff, I’d be on the phone straight away.

I would see how much business such an attraction would bring to the area and I would do everything in my power to make it happen.

And if some local trifle whined about light pollution and mental health issues in the community, I’d put my fingers in my ears and hum loudly until they shut up.

But no other council, as far as I know, has come forward. The biggest opportunity for advancement since the Industrial Revolution – and nobody did anything.

The Tories, then in power, tried to outvote the crazed Mayor of London, but it was too late. The company behind the idea pulled back, saying they didn’t want to be a political football.

Now it has been announced that the new dome will be built in Abu Dhabi.

This is becoming a huge problem in the UK. Tiny, stepped-up regional politicians have too much power.

You would love to have a great new concert hall in your area. And your kids would too. Everyone would.

But then along comes light pollution, Net Zero Nazis and the idea is squashed.

And now, everyone who wants to experience this incredible place will have to get on the A380 and endure a seven-hour flight to the UAE.

So put it in your Net Zero pipe and smoke it.

Eye eye sir! General Sir Mike born to command

It can be argued that people get jobs that suit them.

Barry Gibb was always supposed to be the king of disco.

Marlon Brando was always meant to be a movie star. And Carlos Sainz was always meant to be a racing driver.

But the man whose face best suited his job was General Sir Mike Jackson, who sadly died this week.

With eyes so steely and cliffs so deep, he’ll always be a soldier and always rise to the very top.

You would trust him completely and accept his orders without question.

Whereas with someone like Cole Palmer you probably wouldn’t.

London seems to be dying

The walk back from the tube to his flat past a cannibalized Porsche and boarded up shops on one of the most expensive streets convinced Jeremy that London was dying

ON a journey on the London Underground this week, I overheard a woman telling her friend that her flat had been burgled and all the family’s passports had been stolen.

Later I saw a Porsche that was missing both doors.

And then I noticed that in one of the most expensive streets in West London, Notting Hill, half the shops are now boarded up.

Then I went back to my apartment and for the first time felt a little threatened.

I also felt slightly scabby. The smell of grass was overwhelming everywhere.

I don’t know. It seemed to me that London was dying.

AN army veteran was fined and ordered to do community service for standing on the street and saying a silent prayer.

Let’s not worry about what he was thinking or why he chose that place.

In a free country, he is criminalized for his thoughts.

Give me a break

How much do the Italians owe the British for the trouble of invading us in 43 and the French for doing almost the same thing in 1066?

SO, Barbados is demanding £5,700,000 trillion billion pounds from the United Kingdom for all the pain and distress caused by British colonialism.

OK, then let’s kick the ball and ask the Italians for invading us in 43, and the French for doing much the same thing in 1066, for a similar sum.

Oh, and let’s get a few trillion from the Norwegians for all that marauding Viking nonsense.

In the meantime, I will stop going on holiday to Barbados.

Which will cost them more than I can get, if my last bill is for the bar.

To laugh, for sure

Unlike the rest of us, the government can burn as much wood as it wants

I’m sure many retirees worried about the cost of heating their homes this winter will be thinking about maybe buying a wood stove.

Cunning. There are all kinds of burning laws these days, and as far as I can tell, all you’re allowed to put inside is a damp dishcloth.

However, it is different for the Government. They can burn as much wood as they want.

Drax Power Station in Yorkshire, for example, burned gas.

But then came the Net Zero movement, which insisted on turning it into a giant wood stove.

In America, thousands of trees are felled a week, and the resulting wood pellets are shipped to the United Kingdom by large diesel-powered ships, where they are thrown into kilns.

And the result? Well, it’s not good, especially if you’re a tree.

And we are not much better either. Each megawatt hour of power produced by Drax costs £138 today, compared to £80 when it ran on gas.

So there you are. You cannot afford to buy electricity made from wood and you are not allowed to burn it as an alternative.

Welcome to the world of collaborative thinking.

A little less horny, please

NEW research shows that Gen Z drivers and millennials are far more likely to honk their horn in a moment of anger.

A staggering 63 percent say they do, compared to just 42 percent of those aged 70 and over.

Me? Well, I can safely say that I have never used a horn in anger.

Why would you? If there is an emergency, using the brakes or steering seems to be a better option.

We would advise everyone to remember this. Siren is not for expressing your displeasure. It’s there to let cyclists know you’re overtaking them.
