Victor Frankenstein Wiki, Character Origin, History
Victor is a fictional character and the main protagonist and title character in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus. Mary Shelley’s husband, Percy Shelley, significantly influenced the character. The name Victor was Percy’s pen name, as in the collection of poetry he wrote with his sister Elizabeth, Original Poetry by Victor and Cazire.
Victor was born in Naples, Italy according to the 1831 edition of Shelley’s novel to his Swiss family. Victor was the son of Alphonse Frankenstein and Caroline Beaufort, who died of scarlet fever when Victor was 17 years old. He has two younger brothers — William, the youngest, and Ernest, the middle child. He falls in love with Elizabeth Lavenza, who becomes his adopted sister and eventually his fiancée.
As a boy, Victor was intrigued by the works of alchemists such as Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, and Albertus Magnus, and yearns to discover the legendary elixir of life. At the age of 15, he loses interest in these pursuits and in science as a whole after he sees a tree destroyed by lightning and a scientist explains the theory of electricity to him.
At the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria, he develops a fondness for chemistry, and within two years, his dedication and scientific abilities enable him to make discoveries that earn him the admiration of the university. Victor then becomes curious about the nature of life and his studies lead him to a miraculous discovery that allows him to create life in inanimate matter. Assembling the humanoid creature in an ambiguous manner, Victor successfully revives it, but is horrified by the creature’s ugliness. He runs away from his creation, which disappears, and after several negative encounters with the locals, he vows revenge on his creator.
When William is found murdered, Victor immediately knows that his creation is the killer, but says nothing. The Frankensteins’ housekeeper, Justine, is blamed for the boy’s death and executed; Victor is tormented by a sense of guilt, but he does not come out with the truth because he thinks that no one will believe his story and he is afraid of the reactions that the story would cause.
The creature approaches Frankenstein and begs him to create a female companion for him. He agrees, but ends up destroying this creation, fearing the idea of a race of monsters. Victor pursues the “devil” or “Demon” to the Arctic, with the intention of destroying it.
Although Victor is rescued by a ship attempting an expedition to the North Pole, he dies after telling his story to the ship’s captain, Robert Walton. His creature, upon discovering the death of its creator, is overcome with grief and guilt and vows to commit suicide by burning itself alive at the northernmost tip of the globe. Then he disappears, never to be seen or heard from again.
