The former press secretary for the Queen’s family has opened up about her adolescent years spent living at Kensington Palace, including attending events Princess Diana hosted and watching William and Harry mature.
Victoria Arbiter, Dickie Arbiter’s daughter, discussed her first encounter with Diana during the celebration of her father’s 50th birthday on the I’ve Got News For You podcast on news.com.au.
Victoria, who shared a residence with Princess Margaret on the block of the former barracks and stables on the grounds of Kensington Palace, claimed that she was summoned from boarding school for the day and kept in the dark about what was happening until they reached Diana’s door.
As it turned out, Diana had organised a party for Dickie in her own living room, much to her joy.
I had never met Diana before. She had placed four tables and tied helium balloons to each chair. She had a cake fashioned in the shape of a phone with the words “You’re never alone when Dickie’s got his phone” on it, and the balloons said “nifty fifty” on them.
She continued, “It was fantastic, it was so different. Victoria talked about meeting the late “people’s princess” and how Diana’s sense of humour really connected with her.
She was hilarious. One of my favourite and most memorable memories of her is this cheeky memory of humour. She recalled Diana’s biggest joke on her oldest son, Prince William, and said, “She had a really mischievous sense of humour.
“I’m sure you’ve heard the tales about Princess Diana lining up a variety of ’90s supermodels who were waiting in the entryway of the mansion when Prince William returned from boarding school.
Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell are all likely suspects. She continued, saying Diana was cracking up. “Your big hardcore supermodels, and he walked in and he’d had posters of all of them on his walls and he’s blushing, mortified that his mother has arranged this.”
She continued: “She loved to show kindness to others. She was laughing with you, thus her cheekiness and sense of humour were never intended to be funny at your cost.
Victoria recalled Diana encouraging her to introduce herself to George Michael since she was such a big fan of his music during a holiday party at Kensington Palace that Elton John and George Michael attended.
She also remembered Diana giggling and saying, “Isn’t it a shame he doesn’t like the ladies” before Michael’s sexual orientation was made known to the public.
Victoria praised Diana’s “dazzling” beauty and noted that her eyes had “a depth of blue unlike anything I could ever describe.” Beautiful beyond words.
