Victoria married her Liberian husband, Debeah, many years ago. Before the Second Liberian Civil War, the couple lived in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. They were forced to leave their country and seek refuge in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana. While still in the refugee camp, they gave birth to Alphonso, the fourth youngest of their six children. Alphonso spent five years in a refugee camp in Ghana before his family immigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton. According to Debeah, there was no torture or ill-treatment in the refugee camp, but the only problem was money. They never wanted their children to know about the hardships they go through as parents.
Her son’s football career so far
Alphonso fell in love with soccer after they moved to Edmonton. He grew up watching his father, brother and friends play football and yearned to play himself. Alphonso began his career at the Edmonton Internationals, where he was coached and mentored by Nick Huoseh, who drove him to and from every practice. Nick took over as Alphonso’s manager. Nick coached and mentored Alphonso after he moved from the Edmonton Internationals to the Strikers. Nick is more than a brother to them, say Victoria and Debeah, and they are grateful to him for sacrificing everything for Alphonso.
Alphonso joined the Vancouver Whitecaps FC residential program when he was 14 years old. A year later, he made his debut and became the club’s youngest player, signing a contract with the USL at the age of 15, three months before his professional debut at the age of fifteen and five months. While in Vancouver, he flourished and was named an MLS All-Star, attracting the attention of major teams. He joined Bundesliga side Bayern Munich in January 2019. Alphonso became a Canadian citizen in June 2017, thus qualifying for the Canadian national team.
A commitment given to her by her son
When Alphonso’s manager Nick told him that Vancouver was interested in signing him to play in the junior team, Victoria was hesitant to send him because he was only 14 and too young. However, Alphonso persuaded her, telling her that he would stay the same and not change, and that he would make them proud.
