Viola Davis' 2025 Golden Globes Dress Was the Chicest Re-Wear

Viola Davis shows how re-wearing to an awards show stays chic and sustainable.

At the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 5, the EGOT winner hit the red carpet in a black sequined Gucci dress — the same ensemble she wore two months ago to the LACMA Art + Film Gala in November 2024.

The black sequin dress features a V-neckline with a sequined stripe effect across her bodice. The sheath skirt of the dress matched the bodice with a striped design.

King of women actress appeared at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards to celebrate the Cecil B. DeMille Award she received at the Golden Gala on Friday, January 3rd.

On Sunday, Davis added a little more color to the dress. While in November she wore a black striped cape that fell over her shoulders and created the illusion of sleeves, this time her cape and skirt alternated in rainbow colors.

Davis accessorized with custom Swarovski earrings that fell to her collarbone.

After the Golden Globes, she posted a series of photos of her appearance on Instagram. “My Golden Globes look 🖤💜💛🩷💚🖤,” Davis wrote. “An evening of discovery. I see my ‘heritage’ more clearly than ever. I’m…inspired. Thank you to the Golden Globes for this honor. He lit a flame ❤️❤️🙏🏿.”

She also thanked her glam team for their work, including stylist Elizabeth Stewart, hairstylist Jamika Wilson, makeup artist Sergio López-Rivera and manicurist Julie Kandalec.

Stewart said Vogue on the eve of the ceremony that Davis will wear the Gucci dress again. “When we actually tried it on with everyone from Gucci in the room, Viola loved it and said something like, ‘I’d wear this a thousand times!’ ”

“While we were at our first Gucci screening, we all immediately started dreaming,” Stewart said. “What if she wore it again? How would [Gucci creative director] Saturday [De Sarno] make a great dress even bigger?”

“The rainbow is a symbol of hope and happiness in a dark time. Very significant for Viola who never does anything without a purpose,” Stewart continued. “Dramatic, bold yet classic style made me feel like I was stepping into the woman I’ve always been…and dreamed of being.”

“We wouldn’t have thought to wear it again so soon, but with Viola receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, we realized what a perfect choice this would be,” said the celebrity stylist. “I think sustainability is what we should all strive for, in the smallest possible way, and the fashion world, with its visibility and influence, has an opportunity to help with that.”
