Profession

Vithya Ramraj was admitted to a girls sports school in Erode by her mother. Vithya started playing sports by playing hockey when her mother sent her to school in seventh grade. At the sports school, Vithya and her twin Nithya focus on sports. Later, Vithya joined Kongu College of Arts and Sciences, Erode, where her accommodation, food and education expenses were taken care of. Vithya started training for 400m sprint and hurdles. At first, Vidya expressed doubts about his stamina and skills to compete in this distance. she says,

The 400m race is one of the most difficult sprint races. I also don’t have the stamina I need. During the race, I always ran well in the first 300m, but by the last 100m I just lost any energy. There were many races where I was leading until the last corner and then was passed by other riders. I’m also not sure which project I should specialize in. I was a 400m runner, but a lot of coaches told me I should focus on the 400m hurdles because I had a better chance of winning a medal there. ”

In 2021, Vithya started working with coach Nehpal Singh Rathore to build up her endurance and train on her weaknesses. Vithya commented that Coach Nehpal would make her repeat drills until she succeeded, and she would often cry when she thought about how difficult it was to coach.

Later, Vitiya was trained at the national camp by coach Galina Bukharina, who had been at the Netaji Subhas National Sports Academy in Patiala. Subhas National Institute of Sports). Vicia didn’t notice an improvement in her sprint times and was considering quitting sports. She said in an interview,

Seeing myself unable to improve my performance was frustrating and made me question my abilities as an athlete. I thought it would be better if I gave up running and got a job to help my family. My sister tried her best to convince me to keep running. Since she has a job, she takes care of my training and food expenses. “

A major moment in her career came in September 2021 when Vithya won three gold medals: 400m run, 400m hurdles and 4x400m mixed relay at the National Open Championships in Warangal.

Despite high hopes for her as the next Indian 400m runner, Visia did not make the expected progress during her training at the national camp. After a year, she decided to return to Chennai and train with coach Napal. She felt a little lost during the national team training camp, especially after the departure of head coach Galina Bukharina. National camps have to focus on many athletes and Visia hopes she can get more personalized attention like she got in Chennai. The decision means she will not have access to the support she previously received at national camps, such as special meals, equipment and help with training costs. According to the rules of the Athletics Federation of India, if Visia does not attend the national training camp, she cannot represent India in the relay event. Money was tight and Visia had no sponsors. Finally, her twin Nithya convinced her not to resign and contributed part of her income from her job in the income tax department. Vithya also used her own money to rent a room in Nungambakkam, Chennai, ensuring it was close to her training facility. Visia won more medals and returned to the national training camp. Even after returning, she continued to follow Coach Nepal’s training and consulted with him online. At the fifth edition of the Grand Prix in September 2023, Vithya came close to matching the national record of 400m hurdles set by PT Usha. She was 0.01 seconds behind the target.
