Vyacheslav Zaitsev was a Russian fashion designer, painter, graphic artist and costume designer for stage productions. He was considered one of the most important fashion designers of the Soviet Union, and his work was compared to that of Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.

Vjačeslav Zajcev Age and early life
Zaitsev was born in Ivanovo on March 2, 1938 in the family of Mikhail Yakovlevich Zaitsev and Maria Ivanovna Zaitseva. His father was a victim of Joseph Stalin’s repression and was imprisoned in one of Stalin’s camps, while his mother worked as a cleaner and laundress. Secondary school no. 22 in Ivanovo he attended from 1945 to 1952.[4] Zaitsev was refused admission to the industrial academy, the theater school and the pilot training school because his father was labeled by the state as an enemy of the people.
In 1952, he began his studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Ivanovo, at the Faculty of Applied Arts, where he became interested in production and obtained qualifications as a textile artist. In 1956, he graduated from the university with honors. He came to Moscow in 1956, realizing that working with textiles was his goal, and began his studies at the Moscow Textile Institute, where he graduated in painting and design in 1962.

Career
During the Soviet period, Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin dominated clothing, and he was compared to other world-famous fashion designers such as Christian Lacroix, Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent. Zaitsev was thought to be able to compete with Western designers; but, during the communist system, the only place outside the USSR where Zaitsev could operate was Czechoslovakia. Alexandre Vassiliev, a Russian-born fashion historian and designer living in Paris, claimed that “if he had the opportunity to show his collections abroad, he would probably be a world-famous brand.” He started working as the creative director of the Mosoblsovnarkhoz experimental technological clothing factory in March 1962, where he managed the production of women’s clothing for retail outlets in and around Moscow.
In 2007, Zaitsev appeared as a judge in the Channel One television program “Fashion Verdict” (Russian: odn piovor), where he judged the fashion sense of the participants. Zaitsev revealed that he was drawn to traditional Turkmen clothing after visiting Ashgabat for the Turkmen Textile Exhibition in June 2008 and announced plans for a new collection that would feature traditional Turkmen components. The casual wear line will be made entirely of Turkmen cotton and will feature the traditional Turkmen embroidery that sparked his interest. Svetlana Medvedeva and Clio Maria Bittoni, wife of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, attended the Russian Dinner-2008 at the Institute for International Political Studies in Milan in September 2008.
Zaitsev has always admired the costume sketches made by Pablo Picasso and Albert Benois, among others, for Sergei Diaghilev’s Parisian troupe, and Zaitsev paid tribute to the Russian ballet impresario with a collection for Russian Fashion Week 2009.
Death
Zaitsev died of gastrointestinal bleeding in Shchyolkovo City Hospital on April 30, 2023, at the age of 85. He previously suffered from Parkinson’s disease, which left him mostly paralyzed and with a reduced ability to communicate and move.
