Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, the Prime Minister claimed frustration was inevitable as his government focused on “getting the hard stuff done first”.
He told presenters Andi Peters and Cat Deeley: “I remember a lot of people didn’t vote Labor at the last election.
“I’m not so surprised that many of them want a replay.
“Our system doesn’t work that way.”
He continued: “The thing is, if you decide, as I did, that we’re going to do the hard things first, then I think it’s inevitable that people will feel that those are hard decisions.”
The petition, which accuses Labor of breaking election promises and calls for a new election, has exploded since it was launched by small business owner Michael Westwood.
It now has more than two million signatures, gaining tens of thousands of names every hour after being shared by right-wing politicians and figures.
Tech mogul Elon Musk, owner of X and a member of US President Donald Trump’s new administration, shared a post claiming the petition had broken the record for the fastest to reach 100,000 signatures, calling the claim “interesting”.
Britain’s reform leader Nigel Farage and his deputy Richard Tice distributed the petition on Sunday, with Farage saying he had “never seen anything like it”.
Shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith also shared a link to X, saying: “If this Labor government was a consumer product, after the tax hike in Rachel Reeves’ budget (‘we have no plans to raise tax’) people could put it back in line with consumer rules on fraudulent sales. “
The prime minister’s great escape
SIR Keir Starmer found himself in a bind this weekend – literally – as he joined his daughter in an escape room for her birthday.
Revealing his family adventure, the Prime Minister told ITV’s This Morning: “She insisted we go into one of these escape rooms where you lock yourself in and have to solve clues to get out.
“When she first said that, I thought, ‘Great! I’ll have a cup of coffee and I’ll see you when you’re done.’
“But she said, ‘You’re in there with me.’ So we did it yesterday.”
The Prime Minister also shared another glimpse into his family life, revealing that his staple dish is pasta with lots of cheese.
