Gloria Gaynor’s story will inspire women everywhere to never give up—and keep betting on themselves.
In the trailer for the singer’s upcoming documentary called Gloria Gaynor: I will survivepremiering exclusively with PEOPLE, Gaynor talks about how her hit “I Will Survive” turned out to be the anthem of her life.
“For the last 40 years I’ve been telling you ‘I’m going to survive,’ but I’ve never told you how,” Gaynor, 80, said at the start of the trailer.
The film, which will be released exclusively in cinemas on February 13, documents how Gaynor – who has lived through serious difficulties – rediscovered her faith and love for herself. It also documents the making of her 2019 album Gospel Testimonywhich won her a Grammy.

Speaking to PEOPLE about the documentary, Gaynor says viewers should watch the film for inspiration.
“I want them to know how and why I survive and that these elements of life, these uplifting, encouraging, inspiring, empowering elements of life are also available to them,” she says.
She adds: “I found that the song ‘I Will Survive’ was so encouraging and uplifting to so many people around the world, and it’s the story of my life. So I thought, ‘Let’s give them a little more detail.’ ”
The release date also happens to be Galentine’s Day, which Gaynor says is about “coming together and appreciating each other, which is a beautiful thing.”

The singer-songwriter celebrated the 45th anniversary of her hit in October.
The classic disco anthem — which was originally a B-side to her single “Substitute” but became a huge hit anyway thanks to radio play — has demonstrated its enduring popularity in a big way over the past year. In April, Harry Styles brought Lizzo on stage to sing it during his performance at Coachella, and Miley Cyrus included it in her current chart-topper “Flowers.”
“Not only did I survive, but I thrived,” Gaynor told PEOPLE in March. “I really think a lot of it has to do with the fact that whenever I’m going through something, I use that song.”
