'Water for Elephants' Musical Adaptation Coming to Broadway Spring 2024

“Water for Elephants,” based on Sara Gruen’s 2006 novel, opens at New York’s Imperial Theater on March 21

Water for elephants marches to Broadway.

On Tuesday, the producers of the new Water for elephants musical — an adaptation of author Sara Gruen’s 2006 novel of the same name — has announced that the production will open at New York’s Imperial Theater in early spring.

The series will be directed by Tony-nominated director Jessica Stone (Kimberly Akimbo), along with the book by Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatchers, Jersey Boys) and music and lyrics by the musical group PigPen Theater Co.

Water for elephants will begin preview performances on Saturday, February 24, and open on Thursday, March 21, with cast announcements to be made soon.

“After losing what matters most, a young man hops on a moving train, unsure of where his journey will take him, and finds a new home with an extraordinary traveling circus crew and a life—and love—beyond his wildest dreams,” reads the synopsis.

“Seen through the eyes of his older self, his adventure becomes a poignant reminder that if you choose to drive, life can start over at any age.”

Rachel McAdams will debut on Broadway in the spring of 2024 with the play ‘Mary Jane’

“What’s amazing about circus culture is that you depend on each other to do the trick safely, so as a team we really all have to rely on each other. If we do our job well and connect with our audience, we will literally take the story off the page and into the air.”
