Wayne Brady Opens up About Coming Out as Pansexual: ‘It’s Never too Late to Take Hold of Your Story

Wayne Brady has an inspirational message for others.

“It’s never too late to embrace your story… for teenagers, young adults, theater students, and young black men who are questioning the idea of ​​masculinity and what it even means.”

Brady revealed exclusively to PEOPLE in August that he is pansexual, meaning he is attracted to individuals regardless of gender or sex.

The presenter said in his last interview that the “best part” of coming out was inspiring others to “take their own story into their own hands” and added that he wants to continue to encourage this in others in his work and activism.

“After a certain point, life becomes too short to live in the dark all the time,” Brady told Yahoo Entertainment. “The best part was when people said, ‘Hey, you inspire me, not just on stage, but you inspire me to live my truth.’

The actor and singer is doing just that as he’s set to perform with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) for its Hooray for Holidays celebration on December 16th and 17th.

“In the spirit of being in the family, being able to sing with them just makes me happy, especially during my favorite time of year,” Brady told the newspaper. He shared that he is also tackling issues affecting race and the LGBTQ community in upcoming projects with producing partner and ex-wife, Mandie Taketa.

“We’re all about moving the needle, doing things that matter to us,” he concluded.

Speaking about identifying as pansexual, Brady told PEOPLE in August, “I’ve told myself in the past, nobody needs to know my personal business. The world can absolutely go without knowing that Wayne identifies as pan. But it gave me permission to continue living in the shadows and being secretive. How does it feel to not actually be ashamed, to not feel like, ‘Oh, I can’t be a part of this conversation because I’m lying?’ I had to stop that behavior.”

Brady’s ex-wife Taketa (47) and daughter Maile (20) also supported him in coming out. “I just said, ‘Great.’ Like I knew coming out would help him be happier,” Taketa told PEOPLE at the time.

Brady added: “If I’m healthy, then I can go on stage Let’s make a deal and be the best Wayne Brady that everyone wants and expects. I can be the best dad Maile needs. I can be Mandie’s best friend, my mother’s best son, and one day someone’s best partner, because I’m doing this for myself.”

He added that “there are no dates yet!”
