But today he came forward and explained that they were actually the couple who drove the football legend home, and his son was present at the time.

Posting on his Instagram stories, the angry football icon said: “I’m aware of the video that’s going around the internet.

“The video shows a man and a woman looking around my apartment.

“The couple kindly drove me home and were in at the same time as my son who was visiting.

“The video is from last summer, it is irritating that at least one online newspaper decided to edit the video to show that the woman entered the apartment alone.

“That’s just not true.”

In the video, Wazza – wearing a gray tracksuit – unlocks the door to his luxury rented apartment in Plymouth as an unidentified woman stands and waits.

Rooney is then filmed walking past a huge flat screen TV, and the camera later pans around to show the kitchen and dining table.

A woman can be heard saying “What time does it finish?” while a man holds a blue baseball cap saying “this is the hat he wears all the time”.

Another video shows guests looking around Rooney’s bedroom and huge bathroom, as the girl says “Wow” while the man says “Oh my f-ing God”.

User X, who posted the videos, tweeted: “He likes pissing in a barba doesn’t he… and just having random people come back to show him his apartment.

“They’re not even bad, they just look a little (huge) unprofessional.”

A Plymouth fan added: “I’m horrified that it didn’t work.

“I loved Rooney as a player, my football idol growing up. It was an unreal feeling when he was announced as the manager.”

As well as the video, another picture of Rooney sitting with two women in a pub was also posted on X, but this was taken on an evening in August.

Rooney’s job as Plymouth manager is under pressure after a string of poor results which culminated in a 2-0 defeat at Oxford United yesterday, leaving them bottom of the Championship.

Some of the club’s fans who initially celebrated his arrival on the south coast – and the fact that he liked to hang out in the city – turned against him.

A club spokesman confirmed that the videos of the flat were not recent as Rooney spent Saturday night with his squad in a hotel near Oxford’s ground in preparation for the game.

A source told The Sun that I’m Famous star Coleen – who spent Sunday in the directors’ lounge at Goodison Park, watching his childhood team Everton FC lose 2-0 to Nottingham Forest – was not worried about the video when she saw it online.

They said: “Wayne was with his son on the night of the video. They gave him a ride home and he invited them in as a thank you.”
