Welcome to Wrexham fans are saying the same thing about ’emotional’ new episode

Welcome to Wrexham shines a light on the women’s team! To the delight of fans, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s hit docuseries changed things up with a new episode on Wednesday. While the show usually focuses on the men’s first team, the latest installment introduced fans to Wrexham’s top goalscorer – Rosie Hughes – as well as other key players.

During the sixth episode, viewers were also introduced to Lili Jones, the teenage midfielder and Wrexham superfan who became the youngest player to be awarded a semi-professional contract at the club in the summer of 2023. In addition, head of women’s football operations, Gemma Owen appeared hard at work along with the women’s team from Wrexham.

Sparking a backlash from fans, shortly after the episode was released, viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to praise the sixth installment. “Wrexham women take center stage this week in the show and it’s brilliant. Love the storytelling this season. Brilliant as always, emotional and so rewarding!! #WrexhamAFC #WrexhamFX #welcometowrexham,” wrote one.

“Really cool how tonight’s episode of Welcome to Wrexham was all about the female side,” added another. Meanwhile, a third wrote: “Absolutely love this week’s episode of Welcome to Wrexham. Thank you for highlighting the importance of the women’s game #welcometowrexham.”

It’s not the first time Welcome to Wrexham has garnered praise in its second season. Back in September, the second episode had an equally profound effect on viewers after it documented the relationship between footballer Paul Mullin, 28, and his son Albi, who was diagnosed with autism.

As well as exploring the relationship between Paul and Albi in the second episode, fans were introduced to Wrexham cheerleader Millie Tapping, who is autistic.

After the episode, several fans reached out to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney on X and thanked the duo for their support of autism awareness.

“@VancityReynolds @RMcElhenney @PMullin7 thank you so much for the autism episode Welcome to Wrexham. My son is also autistic. It meant a lot to me and my husband. We were both sobbing at the end,” one tweeted.

When did Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney buy Wrexham AFC?

RR McReynolds LLC – a joint venture owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – first purchased Wrexham AFC for $2.5 million with the approval of the Supporters’ Trust members in 2020. Their joint ownership of the Football Association of Wales brought greater international attention to the sports league region.

Known as the oldest club in Wales, Wrexham AFC is also the third oldest professional football association in the world.
