Welcome to Wrexham fans in tears over emotional episode

The latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham left fans in tears, after a closer look at the relationship between footballer Paul Mullin, 28, and his son Albi, who has been diagnosed with autism. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, several viewers praised the documentary series for spreading autism awareness.

“@VancityReynolds @RMcElhenney @PMullin7 thank you so much for the autism episode Welcome to Wrexham. My son is autistic too. It meant a lot to me and my husband. We were both sobbing at the end,” one tweeted.

“Welcome to Wrexham season 2 ep2 was so beautiful. I cried. As a sister and younger carer to someone on the spectrum, love is so real. Autism IS @WrexhamFX’s superpower, thank you,” another added.

Meanwhile, a third wrote: “S2 E2 welcome to Wrexham I have an autistic granddaughter it was amazing to see them highlight autism which will hopefully help educate more people around the world well done @RMcElhenney @VancityReynolds @PMullin7 and @Wrexham_AFC . The class is acting.”

As well as documenting the relationship between Paul and Albi in the second episode, fans were also introduced to Wrexham cheerleader Millie Tapping, who is autistic. “[Paul] Mullin was amazing. He gives me time to talk and he just understands that I look up to him,” explained Millie ahead of the premiere of the episode. Millie has met the Wrexham players several times, and is also followed by the club’s co-owner Ryan Reynolds on social media.

When did Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney buy Wrexham AFC?

RR McReynolds LLC – a joint venture owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – first purchased Wrexham AFC for $2.5 million with the approval of the Supporters’ Trust members in 2020. Their joint ownership of the Football Association of Wales brought greater international attention to the sports league region.

Known as the oldest club in Wales, Wrexham AFC is also the third oldest professional football association in the world.

Speaking about the positive impact Wrexham Football Club has had on her life, Millie explained in the episode how proud she is to sit in the ‘Quiet Zone’ during matches. Equipped with a designated quiet entrance at Gate 12 on Mold Road, the team’s stadium has been specially designed to accommodate fans with autism.

Providing a range of amenities, the quiet zone allows autistic fans to use the waitress service to take food or drink orders courtside without having to enter the busy concourse. In addition, there are wardens designated for the area to chat and support people sitting there, plus earmuffs and dedicated toilets with a quiet sensory centre.

Although only three episodes of the second season have been shown so far, each of them has received high praise. The first series, which premiered in 2022, was just as successful and won two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, plus six Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
