Police incident in West Auckland

A man who allegedly tried to steal cars in West Auckland while being held at gunpoint has been shot dead by armed police. The incident happened Wednesday afternoon in the middle of a traffic jam, which led to the closure of the Lincoln Road exit and the freeway bridge. It is assumed that the man’s injuries are not life-threatening. Around 15:19, police on the Te Atatu Peninsula spotted a suspicious car and stopped it. They followed a car heading towards the Lincoln Rd exit, where the man was suspected of trying to steal two other cars. According to Superintendent Shanan Gray, one of the cars ran over the person.

Armed officers approached the man, but instead of tackling them, he ran into the passenger side of the truck, forcing the driver to exit the opposite side, according to Gray. At this point in the affair, the police shot the perpetrator, which led to his surrender. After receiving first aid, the man was later taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Gray. The pictures show at least four bullet holes on the passenger side of the truck, where the man is believed to have been.

Sam Leigh, a nearby witness, reported hearing gunshots after seeing armed police at the highway entrance. A police eagle helicopter was also circling the area, she saw. “This was an alarming, fast-moving incident for motorists on their afternoon commute,” Gray said. The SH16 Auckland exit ramp to Lincoln Rd is closed for the investigation. As a result, traffic is likely to be heavy this evening. Bridie, another eyewitness, reported seeing a red battered car traveling northwest from the Lincoln Rd ramp with its bumper trailing underneath and smoke coming out of it. She claimed that the driver swerved to the right while driving and ran into the guard rail while descending.
