Anime and manga are full of romantic forms and character types. These types of characters are called “deres”, which comes from the word “deredere”, which means “in love”. If you watch enough anime or read enough manga, you’ll start to recognize certain patterns in how characters act around their love interests, and that’s what dere categories are all about! There are many different types of dera, but here is a breakdown of the main types:

Tsundere
Tsunderes are a classic type of dere. Literally the word means “hot and cold”. Likewise, tsunderes act both hostile and shy around the person they love, swinging between the two moods like a pendulum.

Yander
“Yandere” means “love”. Yanderes starts to be kind and friendly, and behaves sweetly towards his crush. But if something comes between them and their love, or intrudes on their territory, yanderes become uber defensive and obsessive.

Dereders
Deredere is the purest type of derere. They are just happy, in love and not afraid to show it! They will indulge their crush and shower them with affection, and their positive, upbeat attitudes are completely contagious.

Dander
“Danmari” means shy, and danderes are the shyest of the bunch. Sometimes they are so shy that they can’t even speak, and other people think they are emotionless. However, when they fall in love, they will peek out of their shells and find an opportunity for romance.

Darudera
“Daru” means boring, and Daruderi like to give off a cold and boring exterior, as if nothing impresses them, not even their crush. They will still hang out with their love and follow them everywhere, but don’t even think of asking if they are in love.

Kuuder
“Kuu” means cool and kuuderes is the definition of cool. Unlike other dera, kuudera are actually mature and composed, even when they are crushes. They have a lot of life experience and nothing can spoil their collected and calm exterior.

Buckaders
“Baka” means an idiot or a fool. Bakaderes are usually the comic relief and are completely clueless when it comes to love. They will proudly say the wrong thing or be too hasty in their confessions, but they have good hearts and great attitudes.

Himedere/Oujidere
“Hime” and “ouji” mean princess and prince. These dere types think they are nothing less than royalty and deserve to be treated as such. They demand respect and adoration, but sometimes they’ll get a little more humble if it means impressing their crush.

Hindera
“Hine” comes from the Japanese word for sad or pessimistic. Hineders have a negative view of the world and love and don’t think it’s all that worth it. But when they meet the right person, their outlook begins to change towards more positive feelings.
