The cast and crew of Call the Midwife recently returned to set to continue shooting scenes for new episodes and are enjoying their summer break. However, when production resumed, it wasn’t long before it was announced that the beloved cast member would not be returning for series 13 of the midwife drama.
Olly Rix, who plays Matthew Aylward in the show, has reportedly left the cast and been dropped from the script, meaning he will not be returning to reprise his role.

Neither Olly nor show bosses have spoken publicly about the reports. HELLO! has reached out to the actor’s representatives and the BBC for comment.
News of the actor’s departure may come as a surprise to fans after Olly’s on-screen persona, Matthew, made frequent appearances in the Season 12 finale when he married nurse Trixie Franklin, played by Helen George.

For starters, Matthew and Trixie got married in the series 12 finale, which means that if Matthew leaves, the writers will have to find a way to incorporate his departure and that could be a huge plot twist.
Maybe he and Trixie both leave Poplar or, in a sad turn of events, Matthew goes off alone, leaving Trixie heartbroken. Heidi Thomas, the creator of the BAFTA-winning series, is not afraid to inject heart-wrenching stories and complex situations into the characters.

What did Olly Rix say about his time on Call the Midwife?
Earlier this year after the series 12 finale aired, Olly spoke about the future of his on-screen persona amid fears that Matthew and Trixie will leave Poplar after they tie the knot.
However, the actor seemed certain that this would not happen. He said: “Their focus is on changing things around them. It doesn’t seem remotely in their characters to hang it all up now and enjoy a quiet life. They’re not.

When is Call the Midwife coming back?
