Who is George Boal

George Boal built his residence and much of the mountaintop Pinehill industrial estate in Letterkenny with his fingers, very regularly mixing cement with his wife Betty. After their marriage in 1962, they lived in a caravan on a discovered site on Mountain Top, while George worked as a roofer. They built their residence, then sold the adjacent five hectares for 45 euros and entered the commercial enterprise Pre-Cast Concrete. Now the region is in the middle of a busy region with houses and a full traffic shop and gas station. 40 years ago, when George started, it became a bathroom in the middle of nowhere. The imagination and acumen to see what could be done turned out to be something that not many people shared, and many were skeptical to say the least, especially as George became known as a guy who had a hard time swallowing. However, in the early eighties, with the help of Betty and a circle of relatives, George got sober and stayed the way to the end. As he became involved in all elements of his existence, he became open and honest when talking about part of his past. What he failed to communicate was just how much changed in the extent to which he helped others and one of George’s legacies is the fact that many people today are sober because of the help they received from him.

In 2004, George Boal was named Business Person of the Year using the Letterkenny Chamber, an accolade that has become well-deserved and in all probability long overdue. As he always did, he recounted his debt to Betty, his rock for so many years, and confessed the simplest story of how Pinehill Industrial Estate came to be. On the one hand, he recalls how he faced the desire to have money in his pocket. To Betty, Drew, Ricky, Gavin and all who loved George, everyone at Highland Radio sends our private condolences.
