What Happens to Princess Diana in The Crown Season 6? A Look at the Real-Life Events

While Crown has chronicled the royal family’s personal and political upheavals through decades of history, Part 1 of the final season focuses mainly on one member: Princess Diana.

The first episodes of Season 6 – which aired on November 16 – show the last year of the princess’s life before her tragic death on August 31, 1997.

The magnitude of Diana’s loss is difficult to understand all these decades later, especially as the nature of celebrity has changed. At the time, Diana was on the verge of stepping into a life of her own for the first time since joining the royal family, which was evident when he interviewed her. vanity fair that June. Her friend Rosa Monckton told the magazine: “She’s living her life the way she wants to live it. And she is freed from the restrictions she had before. It certainly shows in the way she looks.”

Season 5’s Elizabeth Debicki returns to portray Diana after her divorce from Prince Charles (Dominic West). The new season follows the princess as she tries to fight for her place in the eyes of the public and the royal family amid her ex’s renewed relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams). Meanwhile, Diana is also in her own romance with Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla), the son of her friend and Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed (Salim Daw).

Although the first part of the season ends in tragedy, it also shows some of the happier moments of the princess’s life during her final months, including her humanitarian work and her close relationship with her sons, Prince William (Rufus Kampa) and Prince Harry (Fflyn Edwards).

From her pioneering walk through an active land mine to her final days in Paris, here’s what happens to Princess Diana in Season 6 Crown – along with the actual events that took place in 1997.

During the first episode, “Persona Non Grata”, Prime Minister Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) and his wife are visited by Diana and her older son, Prince William. Blair then recounts a visit to Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton), telling the monarch that her former daughter-in-law hopes to become some sort of ambassador to the United Kingdom or take an official government position.

The Prime Minister also praises Diana’s philanthropic efforts, particularly her recent work with landmine victims and AIDS patients, saying pointedly: “When Diana speaks, the world listens.”

However, Queen Elizabeth insists Diana cannot be “in and out” of the royal family.

In reality, Princess Diana accepted the position of Special Ambassador for Britain shortly before she died. A month after her death, Blair spoke to the BBC’s David Frost about the role he and the princess had discussed.

“She had a tremendous ability, as we saw with the issue of landmines … to go into an area that could have been controversial and suddenly just make it clear to people what was clearly the right thing to do,” he said, per Los Angeles Times.

“I felt that there were various ways that could have been used and used for the benefit of the people,” he added.

The first episode also sees Princess Diana packing her sons for a holiday in St. Tropez at the same time as their father prepares to celebrate the 50th birthday of his girlfriend at the time, Camille Parker-Bowles. The trio are guests of Mohamed Al-Fayed, and Diana meets Mohamed’s son, Dodi, while on the family yacht.

The paparazzi follow the yacht closely – so much so that Diana asks them to back off so her children can enjoy the outing. While on board, Mohamed strongly encourages his son to continue his relationship with Diana, despite the fact that he is engaged to another woman and will be marrying her in a few weeks.

The trip with the Al-Fayed family actually happened, and Diana was famously photographed in a leopard-print swimsuit on July 17 — Camilla’s 50th birthday. According to Newsweek, the photos were released Daily Mirror On July 18, the day of Charles’ party for his girlfriend, with the headline: “Dear Camilla, this will take you off the front page. Happy birthday and wishes for breasts dear Diana.”

Diana left the yacht to return her children to their father, but within days traveled alone back to Dodi to spend more time on board Jonkial. In the episode “Two photos”, Diana also plans a trip to Bosnia, where she walks through a minefield to raise awareness. On the covert instructions of Mohamed, who told the photographers about the couple’s trip, she and Dodi were photographed kissing on the yacht, without either of them knowing.

Photos of their kiss while Diana is in Bosnia are published in the series. Speaking at a press conference about her walk, the princess was bombarded with endless questions about her relationship with Dodi, which overshadowed her landmark tour.

In reality, Diana’s famous mine walk took place in January 1997 in Angola. Although it is true that last summer she visited Bosnia for the same issue, Crown takes creative liberties and combines two journeys into one.

The episode ends with Dodi giving Diana a present along with a note that reads, “Paris next week?”

Dodi Fayed buys Princess Diana a diamond ring

In the third episode, “Dis-Moi Oui,” Diana and Dodi stop for ice cream one evening in Monte Carlo where they are spotted by onlookers. The couple eventually escapes and hides in a jewelry store.

Diana is on the verge of tears, and Dodi eases the moment by asking if there is anything she likes in the store. Despite explaining that she “doesn’t need anything”, Dodi repeatedly asks what she likes, prompting Diana to move towards an impressive diamond ring before the two are ushered out the back door.

The next day, Diana tells Dodi that she plans to board a British Airways flight to see her sons. He offers the family jet on the condition that they stop in Paris first — although she doesn’t know it, Dodi plans to visit a jewelry store that has the very ring that Diana admired. Diana agrees, delaying her return to London for one night, a decision that ultimately proves to have disastrous consequences.

According to Diana’s former driver Colin Tebbut, at least part of this account was made up. He said Daily mail 2021 that Diana delayed her return to England due to criticism she received from some politicians following her work on landmines.

However, it’s true that Dodi bought a $14,000 ring while in Monte Carlo, and he appeared to be planning a special night for Diana in Paris. His butler, Rene Delorme, said Dodi asked him to drink “champagne on ice when they got back to the flat” that evening, as Lord Justice Scott Baker told the official inquest into the couple’s death.

At the time of Diana and Dodi’s death, Daily mail reporter Richard Kay said the Princess of Wales was “as happy as I’ve ever known her” and may have considered marrying Dodi. He later retracted that statement.

IN Crown, the couple flies to Paris the next day. Diana is also frustrated by the paparazzi chasing them around the city and Dodi’s father, who insists that she and Dodi stop by his house in Paris first. Diana, hoping to have a planned phone call with her sons, is visibly upset that Mohamed bypassed their plans to go to Dodi’s home.

Diana is able to connect with her sons in a brief phone conversation where they both make it clear that they are not Dodi’s biggest fans. Prince William asks Diana if she and Dodi will get married, which she flatly refuses.

While the exact details of what did or didn’t happen on Diana’s last day have not been released until the show’s details, Prince William and Prince Harry admitted in a 2017 documentary that their last phone conversation with their mother was rushed. IN Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William said: “If I’d known now what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it. But that phone call is deeply etched in my memory.”

Harry added: “Looking back now, it’s incredibly difficult. I’ll have to deal with it somehow for the rest of my life. How else would that conversation have gone if I had even the slightest inkling that her life would be taken that night.”

Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed died in a car accident

While Crown does not show the exact moment of the accident, the car chase that preceded the accident is shown. In episode 3, Diana and Dodi decide to dine at the Ritz instead of the planned meal at Chez Benoit. Dodi proposes to her in their room and Diana turns him down and the two plan to travel together to his apartment in the city.

It is true that there is no hard evidence that Dodi ever proposed to Diana. IN Crown, Diana tells Dodi that she plans to spend more time with her children. Unfortunately, she didn’t get the chance.

Although not shown in the series, Dodi died instantly at the scene of the accident, along with the driver of the car, Henri Paul. Diana survived the accident at first, although her injuries were extensive. She was taken to the hospital, and despite hours of doctors trying to restart her heart, they were ultimately unable to save her life. She was pronounced dead around 4 am on August 31, 1997.

Much has been made of the royal family’s reaction to Princess Diana’s death, especially in the days immediately following. In “Aftermath,” the fourth and final episode for Season 6 Part 1, Prince Charles is immediately distraught upon hearing the news of Diana’s death and insists that they use the family plane to bring her body home from Paris. This was reflected in real life when Charles was joined on the trip by Princess Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

While the nation mourned, the family remained hidden in Scotland at Balmoral. This is shown in Crown in a similar way. At the same time, the public was completely devastated by Diana’s loss. Thousands of people lined up outside Buckingham Palace every day, patiently waiting their turn to leave flowers or gifts in her honor.

Both on the show and in real life, the royals returned to Britain after a few days to greet the public. Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their mother’s coffin, with a letter addressed to “mum” sitting on top. They were joined by Prince Philip, Diana’s brother Charles Spencer and Prince Charles, who wore Diana’s favorite blue suit instead of black – a detail that Crown omitted.
