Where Is Territory Filmed? All About the Real Australian Locations Behind the Netflix Show

Vast cattle ranches, arid deserts, and crocodile-infested rivers make up T’s environmentterritory almost as dangerous as the people who call it home.

Netflix’s latest Australian drama starring Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor and Sam Corlett follows the power struggle that ensues when the family that owns the world’s largest cattle station is suddenly left without an heir. Sensing their vulnerability, every rival is ready to take a chance on this billion-dollar piece of land.

The land in question is set in some of the most isolated parts of South Australia that are just as real and unforgiving as they appear on screen. Some of these places are so difficult to reach that helicopters and private planes are the main means of transportation.

So where is it? Territory recorded? Here’s everything you need to know about the show’s real-life locations.

That, Territory was filmed in Australia, specifically South Australia (SA) and the Northern Territory (NT). According to Inside Film Magazineit is the biggest Netflix series ever filmed in SA.

“[The series] captures the enormity, beauty and scale of the territory,” screened territory director Jennie Hughes told the Australian publication, “which will give this project an unparalleled sense of authenticity, aesthetic and audience appeal.”

Most of the filming locations were in very remote areas, putting the cast in close proximity to the local wildlife. Taylor, who plays Colin Lawson, said Cowboys & Indians that during filming he found a large snake under his bed.

“Before that, there was a smaller one that I found in my sink,” he said Longmire the actor told that newspaper in an interview from September 2024. “It was just a little one. Three feet long or so. Just curled up in the sink… But you should have seen the one under the bed, dude. It was fat. I have photos of me with it on Instagram.”

Sure enough, the actor posted an Instagram photo of an alleged snake wrapped around his neck in November 2023. Caption? “When working in northern Australia, always check under your bed.”

Filming locations for Territory include a real-life working cattle station, one of Australia’s largest national parks and a small farming community in the Adelaide Plains.

Many of the series’ “Top End” scenes — a term referring to the tropical, north-western part of the NT — were shot in Kakadu National Park. The historic and biologically diverse landscape, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Australia’s largest national park. It is home to mud flats, rugged coastlines, dense forests and many archaeological sites.

Corlett, who plays Marshall Lawson, said GQ in October 2024, that during filming in the part of the park called Jastrebova zemlja, they were greeted by old men who told them stories about the surrounding landscape.

“The art that was on the rocks was, as you know, tens of thousands of years old,” he said. “Someone said it’s twenty thousand years old, rock art, so to be there and tell the story that Sharnie and I need to tell — it’s almost representative of Australian youth and it felt really special. He felt holy, you know?”

Marianne Station, the name of a cattle ranch owned by the Lawson family in Territoryit’s not real. But the series was primarily filmed on Tipperary Station, a real working cattle station in the NT so big it has its own school and airstrip.

Show creator Ben Davies said Inside Film Magazine in September 2023 that 140 members of their 180-strong crew lived on the station during filming.

“It’s a monumental effort of production to pull this off in such a remote location,” he said. “In terms of infrastructure and size, this cattle estate is unmatched anywhere else in the world, so fortunately it can accommodate our large cast and crew.”

He continued: “And with a team that lives here, we capture incredibly authentic images that, combined with powerful storytelling, encapsulate the world we want to share, not just locally, but globally.”

Corlett, a native of New South Wales, said GQ that he wrote poetry from his character’s perspective while living at the station.

“I found myself actually listening to a lot of the songs I used to listen to when I was a kid, because I was going back to Australia to tell stories,” Vikings: Valhalla said the actor. “It was like reliving being Australian again.”

Davies told Perth Now that it takes “hours” to drive over the estate and the best way to get around is by helicopter, which is a necessary part of station life. While some members of the production crew lived in the station house and in the barber’s quarters, they also had to set up a camping complex with more than 100 vans and a dining hall.

Taylor said Cowboys & Indians that because of the living conditions – the apartment on the ranch they called “The Swamp” – he got into “a bit of mischief” with his colleagues during filming.

“Nothing illegal, mind you,” the actor said. “We were out there in the middle of nowhere, man, and it’s hot, hot, hot, thirsty weather… And they kept saying, ‘Well, you can’t do this and you can’t do that. You better not do this, and you are not allowed to do that.’ And we thought, ‘Well, maybe we should try that.’ Mostly Michael, to be fair. Mostly him.”

He continued: “Yeah, like when they said, ‘Don’t go there, it’s dangerous,’ we said, ‘We’ll just look over there.’ Like, there’s only a few hundred man-eating crocodiles. So what?”
