Adrienne Bailon and Israel Houghton have been together since 2016 and have never been shy about sharing their love and commitment to each other.

Although many know Houghton as Bailon’s husband, he has many fans of his own. Houghton is a very successful gospel singer and has worked with Bailon on various entertainment projects in the past.

In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Houghton said that one of the things that attracted him most about Bailon was that she made him laugh. “I was in a period of my life when laughter really spoke to me. She is my everything,” he said.

Houghton uses his Instagram page as a way for fans to get a glimpse into his daily life, which includes spending lots of time with his family, going on tour and making new music.

Houghton is a successful Christian gospel singer — so successful that he has been nominated for 17 Grammy Awards and won six. Also known as Israel & New Breed, he is a songwriter, music producer and worship warrior/leader, according to his website. He has been involved in music since 1997.

In an interview with CBN in 2022, Houghton said his first real experience with worship music came when he was 19 playing drums in a church band.

He’s a dad

Houghton is the father of five children, four from a previous marriage and one with Bailon. In his first marriage, Houghton had two daughters, Mariah and Milan, and two sons, Israel and Jordan.

In August 2022, he had his first child with Bailon, a son named Ever. The couple used surrogacy to have their child, and Bailon opened up about her experience to PEOPLE, saying, “I have to be honest, even the surrogacy process can be pretty nerve-wracking. Someone else has your child with them. We call it extreme babysitting for nine-month-olds.”

The couple kept quiet about surrogacy because, Bailon explained, they didn’t want to deal with anyone else’s questions, concerns or comments. “I just wanted to have some peace and a little bit of joy that I could keep to myself every day and something to look forward to,” she told PEOPLE.

The two were friends before they started dating

In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Bailon revealed how her relationship with Houghton began, saying that the two had been friends for a long time before they began a romantic relationship. She explained that when Houghton was officially divorced, she set him up with one of her friends and neither date worked out.

The two were hanging out at a party a little later when a friend approached them and said, “You have an old crush,” she told PEOPLE.

“We both heard it and it had an effect on us. It was such a special choice of words and I felt it was accurate. I felt a connection with her that I still can’t define,” Houghton said.

Paris is a special place for them

Houghton and Bailon made some pretty special memories in Paris. The two got engaged there in 2016, a few months after they started dating. Bailon then shared the news on Instagram with a photo of her sparkling engagement ring in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Houghton also shared the news on Instagram, writing, “I saw and felt the essence of God’s grace through the life, kindness and courage of this woman.”

A few years later, in 2019, the two made it official and got married in the French capital. “I really feel so blessed and grateful,” Bailon told PEOPLE after the wedding. “I have never felt what I feel now. I can’t even describe what it is, but it’s such peace mixed with complete excitement.” The two celebrated with an intimate group of close friends.

In May 2023, the couple took their son to Paris to introduce him to the city. Along with a series of Instagram photos, Houghton wrote: “Taking our son to the most magical place… meant so much to us!” He went on to say that he and Bailon took Ever to the Eiffel Tower carousel where they took their wedding photos a few years earlier and even brought him to the wedding venue.

Religion had long been a big part of his life

Since Houghton is a Christian gospel singer, it should come as no surprise that religion is an important part of his life. His faith helped him get through a difficult childhood and difficult family experience, he explained in his 2022 interview. CBN. He revealed that his mother was white and his father was black, and said that his race made it extremely difficult for him to be accepted by his mother’s family in the segregated town in Iowa where he grew up.

Eventually, Houghton turned to faith to find solace in his pain and struggle with acceptance. He said his connection with God helped him realize he had a purpose in life.

“Okay, I didn’t just sneak into the country, I was made for something big,” he said. “The more I think about it, the more I think about it, the more I share it with people who want to hear it, the better I feel about why I’m here.”

He also said that with his service he hopes to “give people the good news” and help them “experience hope.”

In a 2022 interview on Amazon Live, Bailon praised Houghton for being such a great father. “He’s so awesome and so practical,” she said. “When he’s here, I usually do night shifts and then he lets me sleep in all morning, which I love, and he’ll cuddle with the baby. He is only there if the baby starts wanting a bottle. He’s working on it.”

A look at Houghton’s Instagram makes it clear that family means everything to him. Even his bio says, “Honored to be the husband of @adriennebailon.” His feed is full of photos of Bailon and his son.

Along with a sweet series of photos of him, Bailon and Ever at their home, Houghton wrote in the caption, “Being present with the ones I love the most meant a lot to me. Quiet moments. Funny moments. Moments I will cherish forever.”
