Andy Richter was born in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan on October 28, 1966 to Glenda Swanson and Laurence R. Richter. His parents divorced when he was four years old because his father discovered that he was gay. Andy grew up in the Yorkville neighborhood of Chicago and graduated from Yorkville High School in 1984.

In 1980, Andy enrolled in film studies at the prestigious Columbia College in Chicago, where he spent most of his time studying comedy, trying his hand at acting and screenwriting, and starring in several student films.
In 1988, he worked as a producer’s assistant in Chicago. A year later, he decided to take action on a more serious level and enrolled in the Improv Olympic in Chicago.
He was also tapped as a writer for Jonathan Brandmeier’s show, which unfortunately had to be canceled for a while.
Andy Richter began his career as a writer on the popular show “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 1993. He was soon promoted to Conan’s sidekick on the show. However, after seven long years on the show, Andy finally left to pursue more success in life.
Andy surprised everyone with his frequent guest appearances with Conan as an announcer on “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” starting in 2009. Andy went on to work with Conan in several other roles, including supporting contributors, as a writer, announcer, and even as participant in comedy episodes, until next year.
