Biography of Bebe Neuwirth
Beatrice Neuwirth, also known as Bebe Neuwirth, was born on December 31, 1958 to Lee Paul Neuwirth and Sydney Anne Neuwirth in Newark, New Jersey, in the United States. Her mother is a painter who danced for the Princeton Regional Ballet Company, while her father worked as a mathematician. She was raised in a Jewish family.
Peter, her older brother, is an actuary, mathematician and graduate of Harvard. She began taking ballet lessons when she was five years old and followed her dream of being a ballet dancer until her early teenage years, when she realized how limited her technique was and how little ballet was taught where she lived. After seeing “Pippin” in Manhattan at the age of 15, she decided to change her career goals and become a musical dancer on Broadway.
She attended Juilliard in New York after graduating from Princeton High School in 1976, but dropped out after just one year because she disliked the school’s creative atmosphere and lack of training in Broadway-style dance. The following year, she began taking jazz and singing lessons at the YWCA (Young Women’s World Christian Association). In addition, she spent several years studying acting with Suzanne Shepard.
