Ben McKenzie was born on September 12, 1978 in Austin, Texas. He comes from Scottish, Dutch-Jewish and English ancestors. He is one of three children of Pieter Meade Schenkkan and Frances Victory Schenkkan. His father was a lawyer and his mother a poet. His paternal grandmother took the surname ‘McKenzie’. His grandfather taught at the University of Texas at Austin. He also worked with President Lyndon B. Johnson on the 1967 revision of the Public Broadcasting Act.
Ben McKenzie attended the Episcopal School of St. Andrew, where he met Drew Brees. Both played flag football and were teammates.
