Breanna and her husband met while playing together for the Russian women’s basketball club Dynamo Kursk during the 2018-19 season, but they didn’t talk much because they both already had their own friends.
“She was in Russia long before me, I came later,” Breanna told PEOPLE. “I was trying to come up with a team… But then, as it went on, I [started] building a relationship with all his teammates.”
She added, “And then I’m more interested in Martha, but I’m still, you know, nervous to do anything.”

In April 2019, Breanna ruptured her Achilles tendon, forcing her to fly home to the United States to recover. In a short YouTube video from TOGETHXR x Bleacher Report, Marta revealed that her and Breanna’s relationship “started” the night the American-born basketball player got hurt.
“I just remember being in that kind of place where it was like, you know, something horrible happened and then at the same time something incredible happened,” Breanna said in the film.
Breanna added that the recovery process and the distance while Marta finished the season in Russia were crucial in the development of their relationship.
“Being injured was like a blessing in disguise,” she said. “Those moments and memories were huge for what helped our relationship blossom into what it is.”

The proposal happened on a desert hike in Phoenix, Arizona — which Marta didn’t want to go on at first.
“I was complaining because she wanted to go hiking. You know it’s super convenient in Phoenix so I just said, ‘I don’t want to be outside.’ She planned the whole day, she told me to go for a walk, to do something, to take pictures, I said, ‘Okay, let’s do it,’ she said Republic of Arizona days after the proposal.

After the wedding, the newlyweds told Brides that they were waiting for their big wedding when the COVID-19 pandemic is over. I just want the food to be amazing, Breanna said. “The donut wall, the pizzeria and whatever, all those things are coming.”
