All hope may not be lost, though: co-creator Jason Sudeikis avoided giving a direct answer in September 2022 about any spinoff or season four rumors.

Since the series premiered on 14 August 2020, Goldstein’s on-screen persona – the hot-tempered, now-retired footballer Roy Kent, based on the real-life Irish ex-footballer Roy Keane – has remained a perennial favorite across the three series. seasonal driving.

“First I wanted to be a stuntman, and I used to pretend I was Indiana Jones and jump off rooftops and skate under garage doors. I was 29 at the time,” Goldstein told PEOPLE via email in 2021.

The actor, who occasionally performs his own stunts, said he started writing and performing his own plays and short films at a young age. He joined a theater company while studying film at the University of Warwick in England, but also continued to work on his own material.

Goldstein is also credited with his short film SuperBob — a superhero rom-com that eventually became a feature — with doors opening for him in entertainment. “Ricky Gervais saw that,” he told Awards Radar in May 2021. “And that’s why they brought me in to audition for Derek. Goldstein joined Ted Lasso first as a writer

Believe it or not, Goldstein was originally hired to write for him Ted Lasso. However, his association with Roy Kent as an actor inspired him to film five scenes himself and send in an unsolicited audition – and one scene may have landed him the part.

“My personal favorite is the scene where Roy is in the parking lot (parking lot) in episode 5 and he’s standing behind Keeley [Juno Temple] and accidentally scares her with her car. He did so in a very public way by sweetly greeting her at the Primetime Emmy Awards after she won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

“I was told very, very specifically not to swear, so this speech is going to be fucking short,” Goldstein said while accepting the award for his role as Roy Kent in Ted Lassoadding, “Beth, I love you.”

When asked which cast member he’s most in touch with, Goldstein admitted to PEOPLE, “It’s a tight bond between all of them, even though Phil Dunster [Jamie Tartt] or Toheeb Jimoh [Sam Obisanya] he might just take the lead.”

Goldstein’s dad hoped to be a football player

“My dad is finally proud of me,” Goldstein joked about his favorite family member’s reaction to his Ted Lasso success. “He’s always wanted me to be a footballer. He’s a football hooligan, a real obsessive, if I’d been born on the day of the match I wouldn’t have been in the hospital, so at least pretending to be a footballer means I’m finally allowed to go home for Christmas.”

Goldstein has a “surprisingly intimate” podcast about his love of movies

“My podcast, Movies to be buried with, [which has featured Ted Lasso cast members Waddingham, Dunster, Jimoh, Nick Mohammed, Brendan Hunt and season 2 writer Ashley Nicole Black, among others] is an interesting way to have a really deep conversation with someone because even though we’re talking about movies, we’re actually talking about their real feelings,” he explained.

“When I ask, ‘Which movie scared you the most?’ I’m really asking, ‘What scares you the most?’ It’s always fascinating,” Goldstein added. “A movie is a really good way to get deep with someone. It’s also kind of unusual to actually talk to someone for an hour or two.”

Goldstein co-created AMC’s 2020 sci-fi series Soul mates

Goldstein worked as an executive producer and writer for AMC’s Soul matesan anthology series about love that premiered online in October 2020.

Soul mates is set roughly 15 years in the future, where a genetic test can identify your soulmate for you versus dating and looking for love on your own. Speaking of the differences between Soul mates and Ted Lassosaid Goldstein, “One will make you happy [Ted Lasso]and one will make you rethink your relationships and love life [Soulmates].”

Soul mateswhich was renewed for a second season a few months before its 2020 premiere, was canceled after one season in 2023.

Goldstein also co-created the therapy comedy Apple TV+ 2023 Shrinkage

Co-created with Bill Lawrence (also creator Ted Lasso) and ShrinkageStarring Jason Segel, Goldstein is the writer and executive producer of this series about a therapist (Segel) who is grieving the death of his wife and how it affects his personal and professional life.

“For me, it’s always about the characters and the relationships,” Goldstein said Diversity 2023, citing the father/daughter story at the center of the series. “He wasn’t there for her, and while he’s coming back to himself, he’s trying to fix things.”
