Danny Porush is an American businessman and former stockbroker who was in charge of a stock fraud in the 1990s. The character of Dannie Azoff (played by Jonah Hill) in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street was based on Porush. Porush later told the media that his portrayal in the film was inaccurate.

Danny Porush was born into a Jewish family in Nassau County in February 1957, and his father was a doctor. He attended Lawrence Woodmere Academy before attending Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and then Boston University, where he did not graduate and was expelled. Porush later said in a newspaper interview that at the time he was jumping from job to job and starting various small businesses.

Porush met his future friend and boss Jordan Belfort through Nancy, his first wife. Nancy first met Belfort when he was already a successful broker and lived in the same building as the Porush family. Nancy asked her husband to introduce her to Belfort, who seemed to be a successful and kind man in New York. Porush talked to Belfort, who persuaded him to become a stockbroker.
Porush later passed the Series 7 exam to obtain his stockbroker’s license and then joined the firm where Belfort also worked. In the late 1980s, Belfort agreed to join Porush to start Stratton Oakmont, an OTC brokerage on Long Island that attempted the classic ‘Pump and Dump’ stock fraud scheme.
Beginning in 1989, NSAD disciplinary proceedings were initiated, and following federal indictments in 1999, both Belfort and Porush pleaded guilty. Although Jordan was later released on bail, Porush was denied bail and spent 39 months in prison.
