The producer, screenwriter and mom’s sense of humor shone through in her 140-character messages, including one for Eugene’s birthday in December 2021.

“Love and a very happy birthday to @Realeugenelevy, my ‘getting hotter every day’ husband,” she wrote. “I never thought banging women would be part of my retirement plan!”

Accepting his statuette for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Eugene began his speech by expressing his gratitude for Deborah’s influence on his life and career, saying, “First I want to thank my dear wife of 43 years, Deb Divine, for all the love, support and wise counsel over the years. “I gave my speech, it went well. It was good,” he said. “Then my parents came after me and sang a duet – a surprise duet for my sister – and suddenly my speech was just s—.”

He added of the “sweetest” surprise, “It just brought the house down. My mom, who doesn’t like the spotlight, absolutely nailed it. It was so beautiful.”

Eugene credits Deborah with deciding to raise their family in Toronto instead of showbiz meccas like Los Angeles or New York. “There’s something scary about raising kids in a showbiz environment,” he told PEOPLE in 2019. “Toronto is just a very normal city. They could grow up with all the options open to what they wanted to do. We didn’t want them to be locked into show business.” . Of course, the irony is that they both went into acting – and now we’re all in the show together.”

She and Eugene were strict parents

Eugene and Deborah had a son, Dan, in 1983 and a daughter, Sarah, in 1986, and the couple did not coddle their children. Eugene described his relationship with his son as “standard” while Dan was growing up, telling PEOPLE, “Yeah, I would punish him. The thing was for us, if you crossed the line, there would be some kind of punishment. That’s how I was raised and so I raised my children myself.”

While Dan insisted that he was punished for minor infractions such as not doing his homework, Eugene was unwavering in his approach. “It worked! Because, frankly, we never had a problem with our kids,” he said. “It was fun as they got older, because then they would start to make us laugh. There were more times when Daniel made us laugh than I made anyone laugh.”

Day retweeted her at that time, writing simply, “mom”.

In April 2020, Deborah also tweeted to her son: “Today I regret every second of worry in the uninformed 80’s – wondering how the world would treat my brilliant boy who loved to spin. Little did I know they would throw that old world out on edge and create a whole new one.”
