It was love at first sight for comedy husband-wife duo Des Bishop and Hannah Berner.
A growing media sensation at the time, Berner was aware of the Irish comedian when he stoically entered her Instagram DMs back in July 2020. The pair met for coffee in Westhampton, New York — Bishop has a residence there, while Berner was at vacationing on Shelter Island at the time. Their date ended up lasting four hours and they haven’t spent much time apart since then.
“I was pretty sure Hannah was the one for me pretty quickly,” Bishop told PEOPLE after their engagement in February 2021. “When I met her for the first time, I immediately thought not only was she beautiful, but I just wanted to spend all my time with her because she’s a lot of fun.”
Meanwhile, Berner said his jokes and mindset sealed the deal for her. “He lets me be me and we laugh together. I make him laugh and he makes me laugh,” she interjected. “I really fell in love with how his mind works. And I really listen to his advice, and I really just respect him.”
While the fans supported Bravo Summer house alumna’s blossoming romance with the native New Yorker, others can’t help but point out their 15-year age difference. But the gap only benefited their relationship, according to Berner.
“If I met another guy in his early 20s in his early 20s, we grow together, we learn about things together,” Berner said during an appearance on He’s not skinny, but he’s not fat either podcast.
However, as she explained, “I don’t want to be a project manager.”
“So, meeting Des, I thought, wait, wait, wait. All the girls in your past have already given you guidance on what you should and shouldn’t do. And I look at this kind of more complete man, who is sure of himself and doesn’t compete with me. Because he has his own career. He can handle me,” Berner continued on why their age difference works.

A native New Yorker, Bishop moved to Ireland in his mid-teens in 1990. His father, Mike Bishop, was a famous actor and model at the time, but later gave up a career in the entertainment industry to work in a department store to better provide for Des and his two brothers, according to Bishop’s personal website. He transferred during his school years and graduated from University College Cork, where he majored in history and English.
Ireland was Bishop’s primary residence until the COVID-19 pandemic, when the comedian decided to move to New York for quarantine. Since then, Bishop splits his time between Ireland and NYC, where Berner lives full time.
“Mentally, I don’t like to say I’m in the United States anymore. I feel like I haven’t made that transition in my mind,” he said in a guest appearance on an Irish program The Anton Savage Show. “But I married a Yankee, so I’m more in the States.”
