John Thomas Chambers was born on August 23, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. His father worked as an obstetrician and his mother as a therapist. John Chamber grew up in Charleston. In 1974, John enrolled at West Virginia University to earn a bachelor’s degree in business.

John Thomas Chambers began his career in technology sales at IBM when he was 27 years old. John was 40 when he joined Wang Laboratories in 1983. In 1987, he was named vice president of US operations.
