Biography of Jon Huntsman
Huntsman was born in Redwood City, California. His mother, Karen Huntsman, was the daughter of LDS Church apostle David B. Haight, and his father, Jon Huntsman Sr., was a business executive who founded the Huntsman Corporation, which produced generic Styrofoam boxes for McDonald’s and other fast-food companies and was one of the largest petrochemical companies in the United States, making him a billionaire. He is the youngest of eight siblings.
He attended Highland High School in Salt Lake City, but dropped out before graduation to pursue a career as a keyboard player in a rock band. He entered the University of Utah and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. He worked as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan for two years before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in international politics.

During Reagan’s presidency, Huntsman worked as an aide in the White House. During Bush’s presidency, he was the Deputy United States Trade Representative; however, he resigned to run for governor of Utah on the Republican ticket.
He was elected governor in 2004 and re-elected for another four years. Later, during the Obama presidency, he was appointed US ambassador to China and resigned in 2011 to run for president, but dropped out in 2012 with his support for candidate Mitt Romney. In 2014, he was appointed president of the Atlantic Council.
He was CEO of Huntsman Corporation, Chairman of the Huntsman Cancer Foundation and CEO of Huntsman Family Holdings Company. He was named president of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, which was founded by his father.
He was appointed to the board of directors of Ford Motor Company in 2012, and later to the board of directors of Caterpillar Inc. He founded the Pacific Council on International Policy, and previously served on the boards of the Brookings Institution, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Asia Society in New York, and the National Bureau of Asian Research.
