The following year, he accepted a coaching position as an assistant coach with the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League. With the arrival of their children, Brynn, Tatum and, later, Emery, their family grew. The family lived together in Owen Sound for three years. When Drew was named head coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, the couple was faced with a difficult choice. While Katie and their girls went to Thunder Bay, Ontario to be closer to their family, Drew moved to Sault Ste. Marie — they are seven hours’ journey away.

Katie, who is very much in love with hockey, was the support of the family, especially with three children who are enthusiastic about the sport. Her father, Mike Busniuk, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and ended up playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, so she has a family connection to hockey.
After his playing career, Mike began coaching, mostly in AHL clubs affiliated with the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators. Katie’s hockey career began in eighth grade in Binghamton, New York, where she played with the boys for Johnson City High. She pursued her interest at Northeastern University for two seasons. Although over time she concentrated on academies, her fascination with hockey did not leave her.
Katie began training after moving to Hartford with her father. She started with a team of girls from a local high school. She continued her coaching career at Trinity College where she coached NCAA women’s hockey. Katie continued teaching when she and Drew moved to Sudbury, Ontario. Katie envisioned herself as the first coach in the NHL, thinking about her path. While Katie’s desire followed a different path, she now shares her expertise in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She educates and teaches a lively group of 56 girls between the ages of 4 and 8 every week.
