Richard began his career as a member of The Oak Ridge Boys, formerly known as Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers. Their first show was at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which is where the band got their name from. He then went on tour with his friend JD Summer and the entire Stamps Quarter crew. They were invited as an auxiliary performer for the main attraction of the evening, the Elvis Presley concert.
He became famous after the release of his bass solo song, Elvira. He worked with the group on several more singles, including Dream On and Carry On, the latter of which became the country’s biggest hit that year. Richard also provided public notices for NOAA Weather Radio and The Roadhouse, which was another radio station at the time.
