Who is ‘Rolex man’ at centre of Jay Slater case? Mystery ‘burly East European’ may be key after teen ‘stole £12k watch’

A HUGE man who claimed his expensive Rolex watch was stolen hours before Jay Slater disappeared could hold the key to the case.

It is claimed that Jay, 19, admitted to giving friends the precious watch on Snapchat after leaving a club in the early hours of June 17.

Police were investigating a fight outside the Papagayo Beach Club in Tenerife shortly after closing time that night.

It is believed the fight broke out after a large Eastern European man claimed his Rolex watch had been stolen.

Detectives combed CCTV footage from security cameras at the scene and spoke to witnesses, including taxi drivers and bar staff.

One of Jay’s friends who flew to Tenerife after he went missing told investigators that the alleged theft may have something to do with his disappearance.

And today former detective Mark Williams-Thomas made the extraordinary claims in an eight-minute video.

He said the apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire posted a Snapchat the night before he disappeared saying he had taken a £12,000 Rolex from an unknown person.

According to Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – the teenager shared the post with friends while in a hire car.

After an all-night club in Playa de las Americas, Jay traveled north with two men to an Airbnb in the village of Masca.

During the trip, Mark claims Jay confessed to friends on a social media app.

Mark said he and his team “couldn’t confirm” Jay’s request on Snapchat “in terms of reported theft.”

It remains unclear who owns the allegedly stolen Rolex.

Mark added: “However, Jay’s friends said he wasn’t going to make it up and the watch was the subject of a later conversation between friends.”

Jay was jailed for 18 months last year for his part in a gang attack on a teenager.

Tom Hilton was left with smashed skulls when a gang of eight – including Jay – ambushed him with a machete, golf clubs and an axe.

Tom, who was 17 at the time, was left fighting for his life after the attack in Rishton, Lancashire, in 2021.

After a trial at Preston Crown Court last year, Jay received an 18-month prison sentence with 25 days of rehabilitation activity and 150 hours of unpaid work.

When he reached the end of his sentence, he flew to Tenerife with friends Lucy Law and Brad Hargreaves for a three-day NRG festival.

During the trip, Brad said Jay befriended two men whose Airbnb — called Casa Abuela Tina — he drove to in the hours before he disappeared.

But Mark claimed Jay left his holiday “scared” and would not return to the cottage despite his phone battery dying.

According to Mark, the Airbnb host told Jay around 8 a.m. that a bus would arrive two hours later.

Jay then attempted to return to his holiday accommodation, facing an 11 hour walk.

Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – said Jay had spoken to at least three friends via text and phone on his way back, telling them he was lost.

At around 8.50am he made one last frantic call to his friend Lucy, saying he was in the “middle of nowhere” with no water and only one per cent of battery on his phone.

Mark said in a video update today: “Two people told him to go back to the rental.

“He said he couldn’t do it and he had already been walking for 30 minutes and now he had turned off the road and was walking on a path where there were stones.”

Jay, however, sent his location at both 8.49am and 8.50am to friends, showing him on a hiking trail in the desolate Rural de Teno Park.

The battery on the teenager’s phone died then, and no one has seen or heard from him since.

He said: “We have received information to suggest that Jay left the rental flat in fear and did not want to return to the rental flat, even though that would have been the most sensible course of action, and also where he could have charged his phone, got some water and got in touch with friends.

“We continue to investigate this aspect.”

The two men Jay was with in the final hours before he disappeared spoke to police on the island before returning to the UK.

Spanish police consider them “irrelevant” to the investigation.

A picture emerged today of a man renting out an Airbnb for £40 a night.

Ayub Abdul paid £120 for a remote holiday in the Rural de Teno Park for three days.

Officers on the island called off a massive search operation for Jay on Sunday, in a major blow to his devastated family.

On Tuesday, however, two plainclothes policemen searched the Airbnb apartment again.

Detectives spent two hours combing the sea in the northwest of the island.

Jay’s heartbroken family said “words cannot describe the agony” after the search was suddenly called off less than two weeks into the hunt.

Mum Debbie Duncan said in a heartbreaking statement “we just want to find him” after the family vowed to keep looking.

Her emotional message read: “Jay is a normal lad who is in his third year as an apprentice and is a very popular young man with a large circle of friends.

“We are a very close family and we are completely devastated by his disappearance. Words cannot describe the pain and agony we are experiencing.

“He is our beautiful boy who has his whole life ahead of him and we just want to find him.

“We have no information on his whereabouts.”

Parents Debbie and Warren, as well as brother Zak, are all in Tenerife still looking for answers about what happened to Jay.
