Steve Francis was born Steven D’Shawn Francis on February 21, 1977 in Maryland, United States. He had a close relationship with his mother, Brenda, who died while Steve was still at school. Steve’s father was serving time in prison. Steve grew up with his grandmother and stepfather.
Steve had a difficult childhood that included drug dealing and cocaine sales. He attended six different high schools before dropping out before receiving his degree. He was a standout basketball player at his previous schools and was noticed by the San Jacinto basketball coaches. He went on to play basketball at San Jacinto College before transferring to Allegany College in Maryland.
Steve was selected by the National Basketball Association and asked to play for Vancouver. He declined and was traded to the Houston Rockets, his first NBA team. Steve played professional basketball for ten years before retiring from the game.
