Tavis Smiley was born on September 13, 1964 in Gulfport, Mississippi. Joyce Marie Roberts, his mother’s name, is a single mother who got pregnant at 18. However, his mother later married Emory Garnell Smiley, an American officer.
Later, the family moved to Indiana, his stepfather was transferred to Grissom Air Force Base in Peru, and his mother was a devout Christian. The family attended News Bethel Tabernacle Church in town. Smiley and his other two siblings were not allowed to go to the movies as children, and could only watch family series on television.
Tavis became interested in politics at age 13 after attending a fundraiser for US Senator Birch Bayh. During his studies, Tavis was an active member of the student council and the debate team.
Tavis then enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington, but was unable to pay his tuition because his parents refused to fill out the financial aid paperwork.
