Joan Vassos has been named the star of the first season of ABC’s all-female version of the senior dating show, exciting news that was revealed at the Disney Upfronts on Tuesday (May 14) in New York City.

He is no stranger to Vassos Bachelor franchise, after appearing as a contestant on Gerry Turner’s season The Golden Bachelor. However, her journey to love was cut short when she voluntarily decided to retire from the show to prioritize her family.

Now the power of the flower is in Vassos’ hands as he debuts as the first star The Golden Bachelor this fall. The show, which has yet to reveal a premiere date, will run for an hour and a half on Wednesdays, up from last year’s one-hour episodes.

Turner shared the exciting news on his Instagram and congratulated Vassos in an open letter. “You will be phenomenal as a new representative of the generation,” he wrote in part. “From one gold to another… Relax, breathe and enjoy,” the letter continues.

In July, Vassos spoke about the qualities she looks for in a suitor. “I’m very picky when it comes to a man being a gentleman,” she explained. “Someone with a big heart, someone who is generous and also someone who is humble.”

In August, ABC announced the 25 suitors who will compete for Vassos’ heart in the season premiere. “Cheers for a great adventure!” she previously shared.

This was followed by the decision to make a series about senior dating with a female lead The Golden Bachelor ranked No. 1 new unscripted series of its season among adults 18-49 according to ABC. The series also marked ABC’s premiere of an unscripted series on Hulu.

Vassos is from Rockland, Md. She earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Maryland, according to her LinkedIn bio. She works in alumni relations at the Landon School in her home state and has held that role since 2021.

Vassos made it Bachelor franchise debut as a contestant on The Golden Bachelorthe first season of the senior dating show starring Gerry Turner. However, Vassos decided to leave the show during the third week.

The former contestant explained her decision to retire from the reality show on Instagram in October 2023. “My path to find love took a detour this week as I traded the fairy for motherhood and headed home to be with my family. Family comes first, Once a mother, always a mother, I will always choose my children first, not only for me, but for my daughter as well – they are all healthy and happy now!my journey to love… I guess we will have to see where it takes me, stay golden ✨✨🌹”, she wrote in the post.

Vassos expanded on her self-elimination when he spoke further Women say everything episode in November 2023, revealing that she rushed to her daughter’s side after experiencing postpartum depression following the birth of her baby.

Despite leaving early, Vassos revealed that she wants to return The Golden Bachelor continue with Turner. Unfortunately, the timing for her return didn’t work out.

Vassos was married to her husband John for 32 years. He died in January 2021 of pancreatic cancer.

Three years after his death, Vassos shared a heartfelt tribute to John on her Instagram in January 2024. “He was the husband who always made me feel safe and loved,” she wrote in part.

“He was a parent who was always entertaining because that’s all he knew how to do…happy kids because the fun in his book was generally epic. I could go on for hours, but you all know that,” she continued. “Honestly, I think that’s how he’d like to be remembered…not to be forgotten. Please keep telling stories, don’t worry, they don’t make me sad…let’s be honest, most of them are funny!”

She concluded: “As the Greeks say, may his memory be eternal”.

He has four children and two grandchildren

Joan welcomed four children with John: Allison, Nicholas, Erica and Luke. Her reason for moving away The Golden Bachelor was to focus on the family, especially on her daughter who had just given birth.

“A big thank you to everyone who has expressed concern for my family,” she shared on her Instagram Story in October 2023. “It’s a privilege to be a mom to four great kids and a grandma (my name is Jojo) to two beautiful grandchildren .. But once a mom, always a mom and sometimes it’s not time to find love.”

“Everyone at home is doing great and I hope one day I get the chance to love again,” she continued in the post at the time.

He is still friends with The Golden Bachelor honor

Ladies on The Golden Bachelor he went from Vassos’ co-stars to real-life friends. She formed close bonds with many of the women on the show, friendships that continued beyond the mansion.

“I’m so blessed to have been surrounded by such sweet and supportive women,” she wrote alongside a clip of her letting them know she was leaving the show. “I miss these women!”

Vassos often posts photos with women on his Instagram. In April, she shared a picture of the ladies reuniting at the restaurant, writing: “Golden girls together again!”

Around the same time, Vassos reunited with the girls in the episode Celebrity Family Feud. She shared on Instagram a carousel of pictures showing how much fun they had together on the set.

“I never imagined we’d be on Celebrity Family Feud, but yesterday we got to meet Steve Harvey and play to win funds for a charity of our choice. I’m so grateful to have this amazing opportunity with my Golden Bachelor ladies!” she captioned the post.
