Zia Mohyeddin was born into an Urdu-speaking family from Rohtak, East Punjab (now in Haryana), British India, in Lyallpur, now known as Faisalabad, which is now part of Pakistan. Her father, Khadim Mohyeddin, was a member of various theater companies, as well as a playwright, lyricist, musicologist and mathematician.
Zia spent her formative years in Lahore and Kasur. From 1953 to 1956 she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

After making his stage debut in Long Day’s Journey into Night and Julius Caesar, he made his West End debut in A Passage to India from April 20 to December 3, 1960 at the Comedy Theatre, which ran for 302 performances.
He made his film debut in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) as Tafas (an Arab guide killed by Omar Sharif for drinking water from the wrong well). Later, television and film appearances followed. He worked as an actor for approximately 47 years in Great Britain.

In the second half of the 1960s, Mohyeddin returned to Pakistan. Mohyeddin’s rap song segment on his popular television chat show, The Zia Mohyeddin Show, which he hosted from 1969 to 1973, is best remembered for his catchphrase “zara theka lagaiye”, which he used to introduce each song.
He was selected as the director of the PIA Academy of Arts in 1973 and held that position until 1977. He later married Nahida Siddiqui, a famous Kathak dancer, whom he met at that time. Hassan “Moyo” Mohyeddin, percussionist and music producer, was born to both.
