Williams and Skrip met while on a Nile River cruise in Egypt. “I didn’t ask for anything,” Williams told Madame Noire in 2015.

In the interview for 2019 Glamour, she revealed that the Egypologist guide thought the two could reconcile, and Williams took it on. “I made the first move – he would never approach me because I was with my daughter,” she said.

“He happened to be traveling alone and happened to know who I was, but he wasn’t a super fan,” Madame Noire said.

In 2015, she opened up to PEOPLE about their first meeting, saying, “There was an instant attraction, and after a long, three-hour dinner, we had so much in common. Obviously, it was meant to be!”

The two also connected on an emotional level, Williams explained to Madame Noire. She said, “[Skrip] he accepted me for who I am after a wonderful first three-hour date where we talked about ourselves.”

One of the things that helped bond Williams and Skrip was that he was from Buffalo, New York, where Williams’ mother grew up. That was actually the starting point of their first conversation.

“He was wearing a Buffalo Sabers shirt, and I walked up to him and said, ‘Are you from Buffalo? My mom is from Buffalo,’ she told PEOPLE in 2015.

Williams and Škrip were married on July 4, 2015, in Buffalo, New York — a place the couple chose thoughtfully. Williams told PEOPLE that her engagement ring is from a Buffalo jewelry store called Bomi, a piece that Skrip “personally designed.”

“I really got the opportunity to bring my look, my people and my vibe to Buffalo, but I also got the opportunity to incorporate what Buffalo has to offer and carry a local jeweler,” she continued. “It was really, really amazing.”

Their wedding also paid homage to Egypt, where the two met and fell in love. They told PEOPLE they went with an Egyptian theme and decorated their venue with gold and ivory tents, Moroccan lamps and colorful flowers.

Williams wore two custom-made non-traditional wedding dresses for the lavish event. Designed by Carmen Marc Valvo, one look featured a dress covered in gold leather petals. “I felt like an Egyptian goddess, and that was exactly the theme I wanted,” Williams told PEOPLE.

He was married before

Skrip is Williams’ third husband — she was previously married to Ramon Hervey II and Rick Fox — and Skrip has also been married before.

Williams revealed this during an appearance at the 2016 Living with Regis and Kellywhen they talk about why they decided to celebrate a year of marriage with a second wedding that included a ceremony in a Catholic church.

“His undoing is not done yet,” she said. “So we had to get married again in a Catholic church.”

The two had a more traditional Catholic ceremony on May 30, 2016. Williams wore a Pamelle Roland gown with a pink sash around her waist and kept her hair in a loose chignon.

“Yesterday we walked down the aisle for the last time – this time at my little church,” Williams wrote alongside a photo of them kissing on her Instagram page. “Officially married Catholic. Amen! #MyJim.”

He is a former entrepreneur

Skrip was a successful accountant and real estate agent before he met Williams, the star revealed during an appearance on Show Queen Latifah in 2014.

His lack of involvement in Hollywood is beneficial for the couple’s relationship. During the interview with ABC News In 2014, Williams said it was “really comforting and relaxing to have a relationship without the added stress, pressure or gossip”.

During their wedding in 2015, Škrip paid tribute to his family in several different ways. Williams told PEOPLE that his wedding ring is a family heirloom that belonged to his grandfather. His grandparents were also married in the same church where Williams and Skrip were married in Buffalo, New York.

“He’s a traditional guy and that suits him,” she explained. “It was in his mother’s possession and he just kept it because he liked it.”

Skrip also paid tribute to Williams’ family: She told PEOPLE that he wore an ivory suit to the wedding in honor of her father, who wore a similar ivory jacket to his own wedding.

“I said, ‘OK, we have to do this,'” Williams said, adding that he wore the jacket to “keep it traditional.”
