Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. was born in New York on October 20, 1958. His mother was American and his father was Danish. His family moved to many places; they first traveled to Venezuela, then Denmark, before settling in Argentina, where Mortensen attended elementary school.
He moved to New York with his mother when he was 11 and attended Watertown High School, graduating in 1976. He graduated from the University of St. Lawrence in 1980 with degrees in politics and Spanish literature and culture. He traveled to England, Spain, Denmark and Copenhagen doing occasional jobs there. After that, he made the decision to return to the United States to continue his acting career.
