Eric Vetro is proud of Sabrina Carpenter’s journey.
The 68-year-old vocal coach, whose clients include Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes, has worked with the “Espressa” singer, 25, since she was 12, and he’s not at all shocked by her journey from Disney Channel favorite to global superstar status — or her turn to sexy lyrics as adult.
“She always had a fun sense of humor that was generally a little risqué,” Vetro tells PEOPLE. – It didn’t surprise me because it didn’t all happen at once.

Carpenter got into music around the time she started acting on the Disney Channel A girl meets the world in 2014, and she released four albums before 2022 Emails I can’t sendwhich spawned her breakthrough hits “Stupidity” and “Pelo”.
The young star jumped onto the A-list earlier this year with the singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” from her sixth album, Short and sweet — her first to reach No. 1 on Billboard 200.

She is currently in the middle of her hit Short n’ Sweet Tour, which wrapped up its North American leg last month and marked her first-ever arena concerts.
Already at an early stage of her career, Vetro recognized her potential. “I remember when I first saw her on stage, I was really shocked at how charismatic and confident she was,” he says. “She would strut around the stage like she was an old pro, and she was 16, 17 at the time.”

Spending time with Carpenter in singing lessons, Vetro says the “cheeky” side of her personality was always on display, so her lively nature Short and sweet songs like “Bed Chem” and “Juno” seemed like a natural progression for the artist.
“I saw it happen so gradually that it didn’t shock me,” he explains, adding that Carpenter remains “classy” in his moments of cheekiness. “She rides that line really, really well. She never gets into anything that’s trashy… It’s sexy and fun, all the hints.”
Vetro recently offered his skills to the public for the BBC’s Maestro Course “Sing Like the Stars,” an eight-hour video series featuring advice from his star students, including Carpenter, John Legend and Marissa Jaret Winokur.
