Why ‘Supportive’ Ron Howard Is Like a ‘Second Father’ to Eden Star Daniel Brühl (Exclusive) 

Ron Howard lives up to his reputation as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, according to Daniel Brühl.

The actor (46) worked with director Howard (70) on the 2013 film Stare and a new survival drama Edenthe true story of three groups of settlers who travel from Europe to live on the remote island of Floreana in the Galápagos during the Great Depression.

At the film’s Sept. 7 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Brühl told PEOPLE that the Oscar winner is “the best.”

“He supports me so much. For me, he is not only a director in the classical sense, but also a mentor. He is a second father,” he added Inglourious Basterds star, who will direct the upcoming film Break about the German tennis star Gottfried von Cramm.

“Now that I want to go into directing as well, he’s always been open to answering all my questions about directing movies,” Brühl said. “I was grateful for any information because this man has been around for so long, he hasn’t lost an inch of his energy and curiosity.”

“If I’m still around, when I reach his age, I want to have 20 percent of his energy,” he continued.

The two men have stayed in touch since working on Stare more than a decade ago. Actually, they were talking about making it Eden not long after they finished shooting a film about the Formula 1 race.

Howard, who was on a family vacation in the Galápagos Islands a few years ago, learned about the true story while visiting a museum there and was inspired to turn it into a film.

“What I remembered the most was this incredible set of characters that came off the grid and were trying to redefine themselves,” he told PEOPLE at TIFF. “And they had these crazy events. And that’s what I remembered, I started reading about it and I started researching it. I was literally typing the draft on my Blackberry. That will tell you how long ago it was.”

In the years that followed, he made other films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Mountain elegybut he couldn’t get the Floreana settlers—who had been fighting to death—out of his mind.

“There was something about these characters and this setting that just fascinated me,” he continued.

“It was full of surprises, and as time went on, I felt, in a way, more and more relevant – the dynamics of these characters. I also thought it would be a great acting opportunity,” Howard added. “I’m always looking for something to direct that can really challenge the actors and give them something exciting to do.”

Edenwhich has no release date yet, also stars Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas.
