Why The Voice will be different this year as new season starts with a bang

Season 24 of The Voice hit screens hard this week, and while the energy is still infectious, the lineup is decidedly different.

The iconic red chairs are now occupied by John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Niall Horan and a new addition to the mix, 68-year-old country legend, Reba McEntire. This season promises a fresh dynamic, and here’s why.

Enter Reba, exit Blake

The country music scene has always had a voice on the show, and with Blake Shelton’s departure at the end of season 23, Reba is more than equipped to fill that spot. While the singing competition may seem like new territory for her, it’s worth noting that Reba is no stranger to The Voice.

She previously played roles as a battle advisor, mentor, and even Mega Mentor for Team Kelly in Season 23. What’s more, Reba doesn’t stop at just one season. Before the last season even started, she committed to being a coach in the 25th season as well.

Blake’s Farewell

Blake’s decision to retire after 12 glorious years may have disappointed many, but it was a choice driven by the heart. Eager to spend quality time with his family in Oklahoma, Blake expressed his gratitude, stating, “This show has changed my life for the better in every way and I will always feel like home.” This sentiment leaves fans nostalgic, especially considering that Season 24 will be the first season without any of the original coaches.

Training dynamics and new features

The structure of the show maintains its traditional segments such as blind auditions, battle rounds, knockouts, playoffs and live shows. However, the power remains in the hands of the spectators to shape the trajectory of the contestant’s journey. The introduction of the ability for coaches to block, steal or save competitors adds a layer of strategy, making competitions even more unpredictable.

Debut with two chairs

Season 25 is set to further break the mold. Country duo, Dan + Shay (Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) will introduce a new format as the first coaching duo in history. The pair, who recently released their fifth album, Bigger Houses, in 2023, appear ecstatic.

Shay clarified fan inquiries about their two-chair format, mentioning, “It’s two chairs, but one button.” And while the duo prepares for their coaching position, they’re also gearing up for their 2024 “The Heartbreak on the Map Tour.”

Coaching meeting

The interpersonal dynamic between the coaches has always been a significant highlight of the show. With Blake gone, Reba joked about the newfound dynamic, especially with Gwen, saying, “Everyone gets along great. This bunch—so much fun. I get to hang out with Gwen without Blake, so that’s fun.”
