Captain Griffin and his dog Leila were found dead in an incident on the Outer Banks that was “unrelated to the show”
Captain Charlie ‘Griff’ Griffin, best known for his role in the National Geographic series Wicked tunadied.
The news of Griffin’s death was confirmed on Monday on the star’s official Facebook page. “It is with the greatest sadness that we announce that Charlie Griffin and his beloved dog Leila have died in a boating accident today, March 4,” the post began.
“We ask that family and friends be in your thoughts and prayers,” the statement concluded. “We will always remember Griff!”
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, National Geographic and Pilgrim Media Group jointly said they are “saddened to learn that Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks cast member Captain Charlie ‘Griff’ Griffin died this week after an unrelated shipwreck.”
“Charlie was the captain of a fishing boat Reels of fortune and appeared in seasons two through five of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks, fishing side by side on the show with his only child, Jake,” their statement continued. “Charlie was known to all as a lively fisherman with a big heart. We join Charlie’s family, teammates and friends in mourning his untimely loss.

The US Coast Guard notified The voice of the foreign bank that Griffin’s boat went missing on Sunday near the Oregon Gulf. 35-ft. the ship is believed to have “capsized”.
After being found on shore, Griffin and his dog were found dead.
Griffin was accompanied by another passenger as he traveled from Virginia to Wanchese, North Carolina. The search for the unnamed individual, led by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, remains ongoing.
PEOPLE has also reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for comment.
