Woman Claims Her Diamond Ring — Worth Over $800,000 — Was Stolen amid Her Stay at The Ritz Paris

A diamond as big as The Ritz has gone missing in The Ritz Paris itself.

According to a report from France Le Parisien newspaper, a woman claims her diamond ring worth more than $800,000 was stolen while she was staying at a hotel. The guest, identified by the publication only as a Malaysian businesswoman, reportedly took part in a shopping excursion around Place Vendome on Friday. When she returned to her room before noon, she claimed she noticed that the ring that had been left on the bed was missing.

Hours later, Le Parisien said she went to a neighborhood police station to report the jewelry missing, and officers then returned with her to The Ritz Paris, where they collected evidence and have since opened a preliminary investigation.

Local authorities, as well as a representative for The Ritz Paris, declined to comment to PEOPLE. Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling people-interest stories.

“All leads are still being investigated,” a police source said Le Parisien. “Everything is possible.” “If we suspect a theft by a high-level burglar, the service could be withdrawn and the anti-banditry brigade could take over the case,” the source added. “We’re still talking about colossal damage.”

Jewelry thefts are not uncommon in Paris. In September 2018, a member of the Saudi royal family reported a robbery at The Ritz Paris, where she claimed she was robbed of more than $900,000 in jewelry, a police source told Agence France-Presse at the time, per New York Post.

Previously, in 2016, robbers held Kim Kardashian at gunpoint while she was staying at the nearby No Address Hotel.
