Woman ‘raped in Asda car park’ in terrifying early hours ‘attack’ as cops arrest man

POLICE investigating an alleged rape in an Asda car park in Essex have made an arrest.

A woman reported being assaulted at the foot of the slope at the Eastgate Center in Basildon at around 4am on Sunday.

A 34-year-old man suspected of rape was arrested last night.

Detective Inspector Stewart Eastbrook, who is leading the investigation, said: “We acted quickly following this report and our specialist officers and partners continue to support the victim.

“I know this incident will concern you if you live or work in the area or if you regularly use that part of town.

“We continue with our inquiries and would like to thank those who have contacted us with information so far.

“If you were in the area between 4am and 8am and saw anything, please contact my team.

“If you have a dashboard camera, check it – you might have caught something there that could be important to our investigation.”

Inspector Eastbrook added: “We are aware of social media posts reporting an incident earlier in the night where two women were followed.

“We are currently working to establish the details of that incident and the circumstances surrounding it.”
